Jets, Hornets Earn Girls Hoops Wins – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

On the opening night of the girls high school basketball tournament…
• In Division Two, Houghton’s season ended with a 42-35 loss to Kingsford. The Gremlins overcame an early deficit to build a nine-point lead at the end of the third quarter, but the Flivvers scored 22 points in the final stanza to earn the win. Eva Gerard led Houghton with 16 points. Kingsford will play at Negaunee tomorrow. Hear the replay of last night’s game here.
• In Division Three, West Iron County dispatched Iron Mountain 45-35. The Wykons broke open a close game by holding the Mountaineers to just four points in the fourth quarter. Danica Shamion scored 14 points. West Iron will play at Calumet tomorrow, with coverage at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. Gwinn will play at Westwood in the other district semifinal.
• In Division Four, District 98 – Jeffers downed Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 45-33. The Jets will play at Lake Linden-Hubbell tomorrow at 6:00. Chassell will play at Hancock in the other semifinal tomorrow at 6:00.
• Division Four, District 99 – L’Anse got past North Dickinson 54-46. The Purple Hornets will play at Ishpeming tomorrow at 6:00. Forest Park will play at Baraga tomorrow at 6:00 in the other semifinal.
• Division Four, District 97 – at Ironwood – Bessemer ousted Wakefield-Marenisco 61-50. The Speedgirls will play Ironwood tomorrow night. Ontonagon dispatched Watersmeet 65-16. The Gladiators will face Ewen-Trout Creek tomorrow.

Boys tournament regional semifinals will be played tonight…
• In Division Three, Jeffers will play Menominee at 6:00 at Marquette High School. Elk Rapids will face Roscommon at Harbor Springs High School in the other regional semifinal.
• In Division Four, Lake Linden-Hubbell will take on Wakefield-Marenisco at 7:00 at Houghton High School. Forest Park will play North Central at 7:00 at Kingsford High School.

NHL

The Red Wings visit the Avalanche tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 9:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit will play at least the next two weeks without team captain Dylan Larkin. Larkin suffered a lower body injury during the Wings’ loss to the Panthers over the weekend. Coach Derek Lalonde said Joe Veleno will join Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane on the top line.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Heat tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers edged the Red Sox 2-1 yesterday in Grapefruit League play. Tarik Skubal struck out six over three scoreless innings.

The Tigers will face the Braves this afternoon. Reese Olson will start for Detroit. 

The Tigers have sold the contract of infielder Andre Lipcius to the Dodgers.

The Brewers had yesterday off, and will face the Giants this afternoon. Jakob Junis will start.

Former American League Most Valuable Player Josh Donaldson is retiring. The 13-year veteran spent the last few weeks of the 2023 season with the Brewers.
