In boys basketball last night…
• Calumet rode a strong second half to a 58-34 victory over L’Anse. The Copper Kings led by just three points after a low-scoring first half. Brayden Nelson paced Calumet with 17 points, and Levi Kilpela added 13. Dean Magaraggia scored 10 for the Purple Hornets.
• Hancock outscored Gwinn 48-34.
• Jeffers overpowered Lake Linden-Hubbell 79-46. Ashton Kunishige led the Jets with 23 points, and Levi Frahm chipped in 19. Gabe Popko scored 20 for the Lakes. The Jets improve to 15-0.
• Baraga shut down Republic-Michigamme 52-20.
• Ontonagon lost to Ironwood 58-54.
In girls’ play…
• Negaunee hit a shot at the buzzer to edge Calumet 44-43.
• Jeffers outpointed Wakefield-Marenisco 54-38. Raena Kangas scored 21 for the Jets, and Sara Johnson added 14.
On the boys schedule this evening…
• Calumet hosts Iron Mountain.
In a girls-boys doubleheader…
• Baraga hosts Ewen-Trout Creek in a make-up from January 16th.
In hockey last night…
• The Hancock-Negaunee contest was canceled because of injuries and illnesses on the Miners’ team. With no opportunity for a make-up before the end of the regular season, the game will be recorded as a forfeit win for the Bulldogs.
Both Houghton swim teams lost to Marquette yesterday – the boys 124-61, and the girls 129-55. Johannes Myhre was the Gremlins’ only individual winner, taking both the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

The Portage Lake Pioneers edged the Calumet Wolverines 6-5 in a shootout last night.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team has broken into the national rankings for the first time this season. With a record of 19-4, the Huskies are ranked at number-24 in this week’s Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Division II poll.

The Finlandia University baseball team has added a new recruit. Jaxon Monnard is a catcher who can also play the infield, from New Franklin, Ohio.
NHL
The Red Wings lost 5-2 to the Oilers last night. Tyler Bertuzzi and Joe Veleno scored for Detroit. Ville Husso made 22 saves.

LeBron James scored 38 points in the Lakers’ 133-130 loss to the Thunder last night, and passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.
