Jets Advance in VB Tourney, Kings Exit – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball regional semifinal action last night…
– In Division Four, Jeffers advanced with a 3-1 (25-17, 14-25, 25-22, 26-24) victory over Wakefield-Marenisco. The Jets will play Carney-Nadeau in the regional final tomorrow at 7:00 at Westwood High School.

– In Division Three, Calumet’s season ended with a tough 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 11-25, 13-15) loss to Manistique.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University men’s basketball team lost 90-74 to Lakeland University last night. Dylan Underwood led the Lions with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Joe Heinonen also recorded a double-double, with 10 points and 10 boards.

GLIAC

Michigan Tech men’s basketball player Kyle Monroe has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division Player of the Week. Monroe scored 52 points in the Huskies’ wins over McKendree and Lewis at the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover last weekend.

The Michigan Tech volleyball team remains nationally ranked, despite losing to 18th-rated Ferris State over the weekend. The Huskies came in at number-22 in the most recent coaches’ poll.

NHL

Dennis Cholowski’s overtime goal gave the Detroit Red Wings their third straight victory last night, 4-3 over the Anaheim Ducks. Detroit spotted Anaheim an early two-goal lead, then surged back with tallies by Filip Hronek and Andreas Athanasiou. Dylan Larkin forced overtime when he found the net with 37 seconds remaining in regulation. Jonathan Bernier stopped 24 shots.

The Wings visit the Los Angeles Kings tomorrow night. Because of NFL football, coverage will begin at 10:10 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons lost their third consecutive game last night, falling to the Miami Heat 117-108. Luke Kennard scored 22 points for the Pistons, who didn’t arrive at their Miami hotel until after 6:00 yesterday morning, after their flight from Minneapolis was delayed because of bad weather. Blake Griffin and Derrick Rose, who returned from injuries for Monday night’s game, were held out last night as a precaution.

The Pistons visit the Charlotte Hornets Friday. Coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

The start time of the Green Bay Packers’ game against the San Francisco 49ers on November 24th has been changed. The NFL used its flex scheduling to move the matchup from late afternoon into the featured Sunday night slot. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

Former Detroit Tigers catcher Lance Parrish has a new job. Parrish will become the team’s special assistant to the executive vice president of baseball operations and general manager. He spent the past six seasons as a manager in Detroit’s minor league system, first at Double-A Erie, and the past two seasons at Single-A West Michigan. Former Tigers catcher Brayan Peña will take over the managing job in West Michigan this season.
