High School

In high school volleyball last night…

  • Jeffers shut down Westwood 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-21). Mia Nordstrom led the Jets with 10 kills. Taylor Heinonen had 11 assists. 
  • L’Anse got past Watersmeet 3-1 (25-6, 17-25, 25-16, 25-16).
  • Ontonagon v Ewen-Trout Creek – no report.

Tonight…

  • Chassell plays at Baraga.

In boys soccer yesterday, Houghton and Marquette played to a 3-3 tie. Ethan Heckel, Oliver Pap, and Henry Lounibos scored goals for the Gremlins. Jonah Falker kept Houghton in the game with some good play in net. 

At the Hancock Invitational cross country meet yesterday…

  • The Houghton girls easily outdistanced the host Bulldogs for the team title. Calumet was third, followed by Chassell, Baraga, Ironwood and Wakefield-Marenisco. Houghton’s Tessa Rautiola, Roman Trevino Peterlin, Sela Niska and Lily Ross finished one-two-four-and-five. Ella Keranen paced the Bulldogs with a sixth place finish.
  • Jeffers turned in a convincing win on the boys side. Houghton finished second, followed by Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Gwinn, Westwood, Ironwood and Hancock. Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta medaled. Houghton’s Birk Seagren was second. Cameron Anderson and Landon Larson of the Jets placed third and fourth, and Brandon Van Karsen of the Gremlins was fifth.

MLB

The Tigers blasted the Rockies 11-0 last night. Keider Montero pitched a complete-game shutout, giving up just three hits and no walks. It was the first shutout for a Tigers pitcher since Spencer Turnbull’s no-hitter more than three years ago. Parker Meadows led off the game with a home run. He had two hits, and drove in three runs, as did Riley Greene.

The Tigers entertain the Rockies again tonight. Casey Mize will start against Tanner Gordon. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Reese Olson is a step closer to returning to the Detroit rotation. In a 45-pitch rehab appearance with the Mud Hens last night, he struck out five batters.

The Brewers edged the Giants 3-2 last evening. Garrett Mitchell homered. Aaron Civale pitched into the sixth, gave up both San Francisco runs, and got the win.

The Brewers visit the Giants again tonight. Colin Rae will pitch against Blake Snell.

NFL

The Lions have reportedly signed kicker Greg Joseph to their practice squad. Joseph has kicked for the Titans, Buccaneers and Vikings, and most recently lost the kicking job with the Packers in training camp.
