In high school softball yesterday…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell v Hancock – not reported.

In high school baseball yesterday…
– Jeffers swept Hancock 18-0 and 16-0. Justin Heinonen pitched a complete game shutout in the opening game, giving up just four hits, and striking out seven. David Jukkala threw a complete game one hitter in the nightcap. He struck out six. Elias Rajala hit a home run.
– L’Anse took both ends of a doubleheader against Calumet, 12-2 and 10-8
– Houghton lost both of its games against Gogebic, 11-5 and 10-0.

Iron Mountain swept the D-II regional track and field competition on their home track yesterday.
– On the boys side, Norway finished second, followed by Ironwood, West Iron County, L’Anse and Hancock. Foster Miller of the Purple Hornets won the 100 and 200-meter dashes, and placed second in the discus throw.
– On the girls side, West Iron County finished second, followed by Hancock, Ironwood, L’Anse and Norway. Ellie Sturos of the Bulldogs took the 800-meter and 1,600-meter runs. Katherine Jarvis won the shot put and the discus throw, and Ally Fenton won the pole vault.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers gave up five runs in the seventh inning, and lost to the Seattle Mariners 5-4 last night. Detroit starter Michael Fulmer dominated the first six innings, while his teammates built a 4–0 lead. Fulmer tired in the seventh, walking the first two batters, and leaving the game after giving up an RBI single to Ben Gamel. Buck Farmer then walked the only two batters he faced. Daniel Stumpf gave up a sacrifice fly, and the Mariners completed their comeback against Warwick Saupold.

The Tigers continue that series at Seattle tonight. Mike Fiers will start against James Paxton. Pregame coverage will begin at 8:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Outfielder Leonys Martin returned to the Detroit lineup last night, after a stint on the disabled list for a hamstring problem. Reliever Ryan Carpenter was sent down to Toledo to make room on the roster.

The Milwaukee Brewers pounded out 15 hits, and defeated the Minnesota Twins 8-3 last night. Jesús Aguilar homered twice, and Ji-Man Choi hit one out. Brent Suter pitched into the sixth inning, and gave up just one run.

The Brewers continue that interleague set at Minnesota tonight. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Fernando Romero.

Choi was promoted from Colorado Springs before last night’s game to fill in for Ryan Braun, who is on the disabled list with back problems.

NHL
In the NHL playoffs last night, Vegas defeated Winnipeg 3-2. The Golden Knights lead the Western Conference final 3-1. Washington skates at Tampa Bay tonight. The Eastern Conference final is tied 2-2.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs, Boston plays at Cleveland tonight. The Celtics lead the Eastern Conference final 2-0.

Guts Frisbee
Today is Keweenaw Guts Day – your chance to try your hand at Guts Frisbee. Local players will gather between noon and 4:00 at Duane Harrelson Field on US-41 in Calumet. You’re invited to learn how the game is played, and give it a go yourself. The Top Gun competition will award trophies for the fastest serves by high school players. There will be free refreshments.

The 61st Annual Coca-Cola International Frisbee Tournament will be held July 7th and 8th at Calumet’s Agassiz Field.
