Jeffers Hockey Shades Hancock; Calumet Mercies Negaunee – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey last night…
– Evan Larson’s power play goal lifted Jeffers to an 8-7 overtime victory over Hancock last night. Larson’s game-winner was his second tally of the night. Matthew Halonen also scored twice for the Jets. Petr Anderson and Todd Anderson each recorded hat tricks for the Bulldogs.
– Calumet routed Negaunee 9-0. Brent Loukus had a hat trick. Sam Erkkila scored twice, and had two assists. Sam Kiiskila got the shutout in net, as the Copper Kings outshot the Miners 40-6.

In high school boys basketball last night…
– Houghton lost to Marquette 52-47.
– Hancock fell to West Iron County 61-43.
– Calumet shut down Jeffers 51-30.
– Ewen-Trout Creek outscored Lake Linden-Hubbell 81-74 in double overtime. Eli Nordine scored 39 points for the Panthers. Carter Crouch led the Lakes with 22.
– L’Anse edged Chassell 56-54.

In girls basketball last night, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City fell to Bessemer 45-25.

In girls action tonight…
– Calumet plays at Marquette.
– Jeffers travels to Republic-Michigamme.

In high school swimming, both Houghton teams earned victories over Westwood – the girls 140 to 73, and the boys 167 to 37. For full results, click here.

A Dollar Bay-Tamarack City High School student is a finalist for one of this year’s Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Scholar-Athlete Awards. Brendan LeClaire is one of 16 student-athletes up for four awards that will be given to students from Class D schools. The winners will be announced February 5th.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team will play at Kalamazoo College tonight.

Lions hockey player Alex Rezansoff has been named the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Offensive Player of the Week. Rezansoff had four points in Finlandia’s victories over Saint Scholastica and Northland College.

Finlandia has introduced two new baseball players. John Brundage is an outfielder from Oxford, Pennsylvania. Antonio Ficara is a catcher from Tempe, Arizona.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons visit the New Orleans Pelicans tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL
Luke Glendening scored twice, as the Detroit Red Wings slipped past the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 last night. Dylan Larkin also scored, and Jimmy Howard made 32 saves. The Wings will be off until February 1st because of the NHL All-Star break.

NFL
The Detroit Lions have re-hired John Bonamego as special teams coach. Bonamego served in that role until 2014, when he left to become head coach at Central Michigan University. He was fired from that position after a 1-11 season in 2018.

MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers’ baseball stadium will have a new title beginning in the 2021 season. American Family Insurance will replace Miller Brewing as the name sponsor.

The newest members of the Baseball Hall of Fame are pitchers Mariano Rivera, Roy Halladay and Mike Mussina, and designated hitter Edgar Martinez. Rivera became the first player ever to be voted in unanimously by the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Snowmobile Class
The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department is offering a free snowmobile safety class on Saturday. At the end of the course, students can earn their state snowmobile certification. The class runs from 9:00 until 4:00 at the Ahmeek Village Hall. Lunch will be provided. Class size is limited to 30 students (if the class limit is reached, another class may be scheduled in February). Students must be at least 12 years old by the end of this year. Sign up by Friday by calling 337-0528.

Our Finlandia University athletics broadcasts continue this weekend, with two men’s hockey games. The Lions will host Trine University Friday – pregame coverage will begin at 6:55. FinnU will entertain Adrian College Saturday – pregame coverage will begin at 2:55 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.
