Jeffers Hockey Opens Season with Win – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School
Jeffers opened its high school hockey season with a 6-3 victory over Cheboygan last night. Jackson Rocchi scored in the first period, but the Chiefs got out to an early 2-1 lead. The Jets stormed back, with goals from Kellen Klein, Buzz Rajala and Luke Marcotte in the second period. David Storm and Caleb Klein added insurance tallies in the third period. Both Kleins had assists, along with Evan Larson, Matthew Halonen and Jonathan Mantila.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to Lake Forest College yesterday afternoon. Natasha Kern scored the Lions’ only goal. Annah Smiddy kept FinnU in the game with 46 saves, as Finlandia was outshot 48-9.  The Lions and Foresters will meet again this afternoon at 2:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team lost 4-1 to 23rd-ranked Wisconsin-River Falls last night. Dylan Paavola scored on a power play for the Lions. Marcus Gloss stopped 21 shots. The Lions will host Wisconsin-Superior this evening at 6:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team is in Wooster, Ohio, for the Nan Nichols Classic this weekend. The Lions will open against the host College of Wooster this afternoon, and then play Carnegie-Mellon tomorrow.

The men’s basketball team will begin play at the Carthage Classic in Kenosha this afternoon against North Central University. They’ll face the host team tomorrow.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech hockey team lost 3-1 at Clarkson University last night. The Golden Knights scored early in the first period. Raymond Brice tied the game for the Huskies a few seconds later, but Clarkson took the lead in the second period, and added a late empty-netter to seal the win. Matt Jurusik made 18 saves for Tech. Those teams play again tonight in Potsdam, New York.

The Northern Michigan University hockey squad blanked Alaska-Anchorage 3-0 last night. Those teams play again tonight in Marquette.

The MTU women’s basketball team earned a 59-48 victory over Minnesota State-Moorhead last night. The Huskies opened up an eight-point lead in the first quarter, and never trailed in the game. Elizabeth Kelliher led a balanced attack with 13 points. Baillie McGirk grabbed six rebounds. Tech will host Minnesota State tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 at the SDC.

The MTU men’s team is off this weekend.

The Northern Michigan University women’s hoops team defeated Minnesota State-Mankato 71-51 yesterday. The Wildcats will entertain Minnesota State-Moorhead tomorrow.

The NMU men’s team is also off this weekend.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings visit the New Jersey Devils this afternoon. Pregame coverage begins at 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons will entertain the Cleveland Cavaliers Monday night.

NFL
The Detroit Lions host the Carolina Panthers in a 1:00 game tomorrow. Receiver Marvin Jones, tight end Michael Roberts and defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson will not play because of injuries. Defensive tackle Snacks Harrison and defensive end Ezekiel Ansah are questionable. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

Our high school hockey coverage continues a week from tonight, when Calumet hosts Hancock in the deciding game of the Copper Island Classic. The pregame show will start at 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Our high school basketball coverage will begin November 27th, when the Lake Linden-Hubbell boys play at Hancock.
