In high school hockey last evening…
• Jeffers wrapped up its regular season with a 9-1 mercy rule win over Negaunee. Kailob Bianco had two goals and two assists, Brogan Turner had two goals and one assist, and Cage Osterman had one goal and three assists. Bryson Kangas, Brit Heinonen, Griffin Heinonen and Cody Turner each scored once. Kasen Helminen stopped 10 shots.

College Hockey
Michigan Tech goaltender Blake Pietila has been named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Student-Athlete of the Year. Pietila was recently named a CCHA Scholar-Athlete and has been on the conference all-academic team for the last four years. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering last the spring and is currently pursuing an MBA.
NHL
The Red Wings skate at Vancouver tonight. Coverage will start at 9:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons lost to the Suns 116-100 last evening. Newcomer Simone Fontecchio led Detroit with 18 points.
The Pistons will take a week off for the all star break, and return to action at Indiana a week from tonight.
Before last night’s game, Detroit’s Isaiah Stewart punched Phoenix player Drew Eubanks. The incident happened at the Footprint Center loading dock, near the team buses. There’s no word as to what started the altercation. Police were called. Stewart was reportedly arrested, issued a citation, and released from custody. The NBA is reviewing the situation. Both teams released statements, with the Pistons saying they’re gathering and reviewing information, and the Suns calling the punch an unprovoked act of unacceptable violence. Stewart is currently sidelined, recovering from a sprained ankle.
MLB
The Brewers have traded pitcher Clayton Andrews to the Yankees. Andrews had been designated for assignment last week, following the signing of right-hander Jakob Junis. In exchange, Milwaukee gets 19-year-old pitching prospect Joshua Quezada.
Meanwhile, as Milwaukee pitchers and catchers report to training camp today, there’s still no word on the status of the deal between the club and free agent catcher Gary Sánchez. The agreement was first reported a week ago, but no official confirmation has been announced.
Sled Hockey
The Keweenaw Rockets Sled Hockey Team will host a sled hockey event at Dee Stadium Saturday at 5:00. All are invited to try the sport, compete, learn more about it, and find out how to support it. All equipment is provided. For full details, click here.
Nordic Skiing
The Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club will host its annual Retro Ski event Sunday at the Maasto Hiihto trails. Meet at 1:15 at the Four Seasons Chalet at the Driving Park. Participants are encouraged to wear old style gear and bring old skis, but it’s not required – all are welcome. The event includes breaking trail and possibly some lightly groomed trails.
