Jeffers Hockey Improves to 5-0 – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school boys basketball last night…

  • Hancock fell to Westwood 82-20.
  • Chassell lost to Watersmeet 77-40.
  • Baraga shut down Jeffers 57-29. Daniel Connor had 24 points for the Vikings. Levi Kinnunen led the Jets with 10 points. 
  • West Iron County dropped a 58-57 overtime heartbreaker to Bark River-Harris.

In girls play last evening…

  • Houghton pulled away in the fourth quarter, and defeated L’Anse 77-67. Eva Gerard led the Gremlins with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Jacey Sleeman added 18 points, Ellie Hainault 14 points, and Tessa Rautiola 10 points for the Gremlins. Mylee Londo paced the Purple Hornets with 21 points. Brooklyn Dompier added 19, Kwynn Voshkul 13, and Princess Pierre 10 points.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell stopped Chassell 54-20.
  • Dollar Bay-Tamarack City lost at Stephenson 48-30.
  • Baraga downed Jeffers 40-29. Kara Roberts paced the Vikings with 23 points. Taylor Heinonen had 13 for the Jets, and Mia Nordstrom had 12.
  • Ontonagon outscored Bessemer 32-20.
  • Ewen-Trout Creek cruised past Norway 61-35.
  • West Iron County lost a 49-47 squeaker to Iron Mountain.
  • Forest Park outlasted Carney-Nadeau 61-55 in double overtime.

On the hockey schedule last night…

  • Calumet lost 3-0 to Marquette. Each team fired 26 shots. Cole Kelly earned the shutout for the Sentinels. Beau Jukuri kept the Kings in the game at 1 to 0 until less than five minutes remained. Marquette’s final tally was an empty-netter.
  • Jeffers improved to 5-0 on the season with a 7-1 victory over Kingsford.

The Houghton swim teams split their match against Kingsford yesterday.

  • The girls fell 101-79. Individual winners for the Gremlins included Rose Dennis in the 200 freestyle, Meg Ruohonen in diving, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Evelyn LaTendresse, Alaina Eles, Rose Dennis and Stella Soumis.
  • The boys earned a 94-83 victory. Individual winners included Brett Gaff in the 200 freestyle, Beau Haataja in the 50 and 100 freestyle, Evan Massaway in diving, William Jiang in the 500 freestyle, Collin Raasio in the 100 breaststroke, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Brett Gaff, Josh Bennett, Collin Raasio, and Beau Haataja.

NHL

The Red Wings dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to the Bruins last night. Lucas Raymond scored both Detroit goals. Ville Husso made 32 saves.

The Wings visit the Senators tomorrow. 

NBA

The Pistons suffered an ugly 128-107 loss to the Bucks last evening. Cade Cunningham scored 23 points. The defeat eliminated Detroit from the NBA’s in-season tournament.

The Pistons visit the Celtics tonight, with coverage at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.
