In hockey yesterday…
At the Trenton Showcase…
- Calumet fell to Alpena 5-4. The Copper Kings grabbed an early lead with a first-period goal from Liam Pomroy. The Wildcats tied the game two minutes later. Calumet again took the lead with a second-period tally by Kobe Solmonson. The Wildcats tied the game 38 seconds later, then scored twice more to take command. Third-period goals by Ted Loukus and Brendan Boberg tied the game, but Alpena’s Brody Misiak scored with 83 seconds remaining to give the Wildcats the win. Beau Jukuri made 22 saves for the Kings. - Hancock built an early lead, and shut down Rockford 4-1. Tevin Stukel scored twice, Tyler Axford had a goal and an assist, and Brady Axford scored once. Adam Mikkola made 11 saves for the Bulldogs.
- Houghton fell to Orchard Lake St. Mary 4-3 in a shootout. Each team scored a goal in each period – Connor Arko for the Gremlins in the first frame, Noah Maillette in the second, and Brody Donnelly in the third. Thaddeus Raynish of the Eaglets tied the game with a late goal, and then netted the only tally in the shootout.
- Jeffers blanked Manistique 8-0 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The game ended after two periods because of the mercy rule. Brogan Turner, Benton Rajala and Brit Heinonen each scored twice, and Hudson Heinonen and Easton Therrian got one each. Kasen Helminen got the shutout in net, as the Jets outshot the Emeralds 29-5.

- Hancock plays Bay City at 7:50.

In boys basketball last evening…
- Hancock fell to Lake Linden-Hubbell 55-43.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City earned a 49-31 homecoming win over Jeffers.
- Ontonagon lost to Bessemer 55-49.
- Forest Park smothered North Central 75-27.
In girls play last evening…
- Calumet dropped a 48-46 nailbiter to Gladstone. Lilly Johnson led the Copper Kings with 20 points.
- Hancock stopped Gwinn 37-27.
The Calumet and L’Anse bowling teams will compete at the U.P. championships at Iron Mountain today.
College Basketball
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams host Grand Valley today – the women at noon, and the men at 2.
Both Northern Michigan squads entertain Davenport this afternoon.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team has this weekend off.
Northern Michigan fell 3-2 in overtime to Bowling Green last night. Rasmus Larsson scored his first collegiate goal early in the game. Tanner Latsch forced overtime with a goal in the final minute, after the Wildcats had pulled their goalie. Jackson Niedermayer’s goal in overtime won it for the Falcons. Ryan Oulette made 34 saves for the ‘Cats. Those teams skate again tonight in Marquette.
Great Lakes Hockey League
The Portage Lake Pioneers shaded the Fond du Lac Bears 4-3 last night.
The Calumet Wolverines entertain the Bears tonight. Faceoff is at 9:15 at the Colosseum.
NHL
The Red Wings visit the Flames tonight. Coverage will begin at 9:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons broke their three-game losing streak with a 117-102 victory over the Mavericks last evening. Cade Cunningham celebrated his addition to the All Star Team by scoring 40 points. Jalen Duren had 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Detroit will host the Bulls tomorrow afternoon.
Pistons forward Ausar Thompson has been selected to play in the NBA’s Rising Stars game.
MLB
The Brewers and catcher William Contreras have agreed to a $6.1 million contract for this coming season, avoiding arbitration.
