Jeffers Dominates All-CMC Boys All-Stars – Monday Sports Wrap

High School

The boys basketball district tournament opens tonight.
• Division Two, Houghton plays at Gladstone at 6:00. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Division Three, District 65 – Hancock plays at Calumet at 6:00, Coverage will start at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• Division Three, District 66 – West Iron County plays at Gwinn; Bark River-Harris tips off at Manistique.
• Division Four, District 98 – Dollar Bay-Tamarack City plays at Baraga at 6:00.
• Division Four, District 97 – Bessemer faces Ironwood at 7:00 at Ewen-Trout Creek.
• Division Four, District 99 – Republic-Michigamme plays at North Dickinson.

Jeffers swept the top honors as the All-Copper Mountain Conference boys basketball teams were announced yesterday. Levi Frahm was named Player of the Year, Landon Larson was tabbed as Defensive Player of the Year, John Schutz was honored as Coach of the Year, and the Jets were named Team of the Year.

Joining Frahm on the Elite Squad was teammate Matthew Schutz, Gabe Popko from Lake Linden-Hubbell, Liam Tourtillot from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Austin Gordon from Ewen-Trout Creek, and Carter Cole from Wakefield-Marenisco.

Other local players added to the Copper Country Division First team include Lake Linden’s Danny Marcotte, and Eli Danison from Chassell. Members of the Copper Country Division Second Team include Lincoln Just from Jeffers, Jayme Denomie from Baraga, Josh Daavettila from Lake Linden, Oliver Campbell from Chassell, and Caleb Kentala from Dollar Bay. Caden Besonen from Ewen-Trout Creek and Jerry Majurin from Ontonagon were placed on the Porcupine Mountains Division Second Team.

In girls high school basketball tonight…
• Jeffers welcomes Westwood.

The schedule is set for the girls district tournament, which opens a week from tonight.
• Division Two – Houghton entertains Kingsford at 6:00. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Division Three – West Iron County plays at Iron Mountain.
• Division Four, District 97 – at Ironwood – Wakefield-Marenisco faces Bessemer in the early game; Ontonagon takes on Watersmeet in the nightcap.
• Division Four, District 98 – Jeffers plays at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City at 6:00.
• Division Four, District 99 – L’Anse opens at North Dickinson at 6:00.

Two members of the Houghton High School ski team will compete at the Division Two state finals at Nub’s Nob today. Jack Haeussler and Eli Heathman qualified for the slalom at the regional meet two weeks ago.

Houghton won the JV hockey tournament, defeating Calumet 5-2 in the championship game yesterday.

NHL

The Red Wings pulled out a 3-2 victory over the Blackhawks last night. Former Blackhawk Patrick Kane scored the game-winner in overtime in his return to the Windy City. Alex DeBrincat’s goal late in the third period forced the extra stanza. James Reimer made 33 saves.

The Wings have won five straight, and host the Capitals tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Knicks tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers couldn’t hold a six-run lead, and wound up in a 9-9 tie with the Rays yesterday. Justyn-Henry Malloy and Carson Kelley homered for Detroit.

The Tigers face the Astros this afternoon. Jack Flaherty will start for Detroit. Coverage begins at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers lost to the Rockies 10-3. William Contreras homered.

The Brewers will face the Reds this afternoon. Bryse Wilson will start.
