Jeffers Baseball, Hancock Softball Hope to Advance Today – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

The Jeffers baseball team will face East Jordan for a Division Four regional title today at 10:00 at Indian Lakes High School. Coverage will begin around 9:45 on KBear 102.3. Rogers City and Rudyard will play for their regional title at 12:30. The state quarterfinal game between the winners of those two contests will be played at 2:30. We’ll broadcast that on KBear 102.3 if the Jets advance. Tickets for the games must be purchased in advance online at GoFan.co.

The Hancock softball team will take on Ishpeming in a Division Four regional semifinal tomorrow morning at Bark River-Harris. Superior Central and Norway will meet in the other semifinal. The regional title game will be played between the winners tomorrow afternoon. Tickets for the games must be purchased in advance online at GoFan.co. Hancock athletic director Chris Salani has asked us to emphasize that there will be no opportunity to buy tickets at the gate.

NBA

The Nuggets turned down the Heat 108-95 last night, and took a 3-1 lead in the NBA Championship Series. Game five will be played Monday in Denver.

NHL

The Panthers host the Golden Knights as the Stanley Cup championship series continues tonight. Vegas leads the set 2-1.

MLB

The Tigers’ losing streak reached seven games last night, with an 11-6 loss to the Diamondbacks. Michael Lorenzen gave up two runs over the first six innings, but left as Arizona broke the game open with seven runs in the seventh. Jake Rogers hit two home runs, and Javier Báez knocked one out.

The Tigers host the Diamondbacks again this afternoon. Matthew Boyd will start against Ryne Nelson. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Outfielder Akil Baddoo left last night’s game after suffering a right quad injury while running the bases. He’ll be evaluated today.

Detroit added some depth by claiming Nick Solak off waivers from the Braves. He can play second base, and the outfield. He’s been assigned to Toledo. The Tigers will be the fifth organization he’s played for this season.

The Brewers fell behind early, and lost to the Athletics 5-2 last evening. Adrian Houser gave up all five Oakland runs over four innings. The offense collected just four hits.

The Brewers welcome the Athletics again this afternoon. Julio Teheran will pitch against Paul Blackburn.

Milwaukee has placed pitchers Bennett Sousa and Jake Cousins the injured list because of shoulder issues. Because of that, Cousins’ recent option to Triple-A Nashville has been rescinded. Tyson Miller has been called up from the Sounds to help fill in.

Fishing

The annual Rice Lake Fishing Derby will be held tomorrow, with prizes for catches of northern pike and walleye. This is a family event, with entry fees of just $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for juniors and $1.00 for children.

Registration will be open at the Lake Linden-Hubbell Sportsmen’s Association clubhouse on Rice Lake this evening between 6:00 and 8:00, and tomorrow between 7:00 am and 1:00 pm.

No fishing licenses are necessary anywhere in the state today or tomorrow, because of Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend All other fishing rules remain in effect.
