Jeffers Baseball Falls in Quarters, Hancock Softball Advances to Quarters – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

The Jeffers baseball team’s season ended with a 7-4 loss to Rudyard in the state quarterfinals Saturday. The Jets won a regional championship earlier in the day, blanking East Jordan 2-0. The Jets conclude their campaign with a record of 24-2.

The Hancock softball team advanced to the state quarterfinals with an 18-3 rout of Norway Saturday in their regional championship game. The Bulldogs eliminated Ishpeming 4-3 in the regional semifinal Saturday morning. Hancock will face Johannesburg-Lewiston in the quarterfinals Tuesday at 5:00 at Sault Ste. Marie. Tickets for the game must be purchased in advance online here.

NBA

The Nuggets will host the Heat in game five of the NBA championship series Monday night. Denver leads the series 3-1.

NHL

The Golden Knights edged the Panthers 3-2 Saturday night. Vegas takes a 3-1 lead in the Stanley Cup championship series, and will host game five on Tuesday.

MLB

The Tigers’ losing streak reached eight games Saturday, with a 5-0 loss to the Diamondbacks. Matthew Boyd struggled again, allowing all five Arizona runs over five innings.

The Tigers host the Diamondbacks again today. Joey Wentz will start against Zac Gallen. Coverage will begin immediately following the Sunday church broadcast on 99.3 The Lift, with the first pitch at 11:35.

As expected, outfielder Akil Baddoo has been placed on the injured list, after suffering a right quad injury while running the bases Friday. Nick Solak, who was claimed off waivers from the Braves last week, will be called up from Toledo to fill in.

The Brewers lost to the Athletics 2-1 in 10 innings Saturday. Milwaukee wasted another fine start from Julio Teheran, who gave up a run on six hits through seven innings. William Contreras’ homer in the eighth inning tied the game, but Aledmys Diaz’s RBI single off Joel Payamps in the top of the 10th won it for Oakland.

The Brewers welcome the Athletics again this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will pitch against JP Sears.

Fishing

At the Keweenaw Bay Classic Fishing Tournament Saturday…
• In the Lake Trout Division, Bird Dog placed first, with a catch of 38.6 pounds. Lyberg and Lyberg came in second, and Lake Superior Jigging finished third. Bird Dog landed the biggest fish, at 22.86 pounds.
• In the Salmon Division, SB 2.0 placed first, with a catch of 22.48 pounds, nosing out second place Live Wire at 22.35 pounds. Bottom Bouncer finished third. SB 2.0’s 13-pound salmon was the largest of the day.
