MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost 4-3 to the New York Mets yesterday. Spencer Turnbull set down the first nine batters he faced, but stumbled in the fourth inning when the Mets scored all their runs. He recovered and pitched through the seventh. Nicholas Castellanos homered.

The Tigers visit the Baltimore Orioles this afternoon. Daniel Norris will start against Gabriel Ynoa. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

Before yesterday’s game, Detroit sent pitcher Gregory Soto down to Toledo, and brought up reliever Matt Hall. Hall’s stay didn’t last long – he was sent back to Toledo after the game, to make room for right-hander Austin Adams, who was claimed off waivers from the Minnesota Twins.

Brandon Woodruff pitched eight innings of one-hit ball, as the Milwaukee Brewers pounded the Philadelphia Phillies 9-1 yesterday. Woodruff had two hits himself, and the Crew got two home runs from Ben Gamel, and one each from Yasmani Grandal, Hernán Pérez, and Christian Yelich.

The Brewers open an interleague series against the Twins at Minnesota tonight. Gio Gonzalez will pitch against Michael Pineda.

NHL

The Stanley Cup series between the Boston Bruins and the Saint Louis Blues begins tonight in Boston.

Football fans are mourning the death of legendary Green Bay Packers quarterback Bart Starr. Starr was Green Bay’s 17th-round draft pick in 1956, after a standout career at the University of Alabama. He rode the Green Bay bench for five seasons, until first-year coach Vince Lombardi made him the starter. He led the team to NFL championships in 1962 and 1965, and Super Bowl victories in 1966 and 1967. He later coached the team. Starr is being remembered as much for his class, humility and charity work as he is for his on-the-field exploits. He suffered a series of strokes beginning four years ago, which eventually led to his death yesterday at age 85.
