Isaacson to Coach MTU Track – Tuesday Sports Update

The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and begin a quick two-game home set against the Miami Marlins tonight. Mike Pelfrey will start against Adam Conley. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers also had yesterday off, and start a three-game home series against the Los Angeles Dodgers this evening. Chase Anderson will pitch against Julio Urias.

Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch
In Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball League play last night, Rosalie Anderson stole home in the seventh inning to give Superior National Bank a 4-3 victory over Auto Pro Glass and Tire. Anderson had a double and a single, and was also the winning pitcher. SNB then fell to Northern Michigan Land Brokers 7-4 in the second game of the evening. Hannah Hill earned the win for Northern Michigan Land Brokers, and had three hits.

In Copper Country Twilight Baseball League play tonight…
– Pat’s Food-Mosquito Inn faces Dean Kangas-State Farm at the Hancock Driving Park.
– The Copper Country Miners meet Superior National Bank-Stanton at the Stanton Field.

In Copper Country Horseshoe League play last night…
– L and L took over first place by defeating Harter’s Party Store 7-2.
– Calumet One slipped to second place, despite edging Luigi’s 5-4.
– Drift Inn got past Harter’s Carquest 5-4.
– Calumet Electronics shaded Gasoline Alley 5-4.
– Ahmeek Fire Department defeated Dreamland One 6-3.
– Dreamland Two beat Fat Lil Bandits 7-2.

Jake Isaacson will be the new head coach for track and field at Michigan Tech. Isaacson will also serve as assistant coach for cross country. He was a graduate assistant coach with Tech last year, and a cross country All-American at Grand Valley in 2012. He’ll replace Joe Haggenmiller as track and field coach. Haggenmiller will continue as head coach of the cross country and Nordic ski teams.

Former Detroit Red Wings goalie Rogie Vachon has been elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. The call was a long time coming for Vachon, who was one of the game’s dominant goaltenders in the 1970s, and is now 70 years old. He played just two of his 16 seasons in Detroit, and those were late in his career. He found his greatest success with the Canadiens and the Kings. Former players Eric Lindros and Sergei Makarov, and late coach and team executive Pat Quinn will also be enshrined this year.

Kermit’s Kids Golf Scramble
The sixth annual Kermit’s Keweenaw Kids golf scramble will be held Saturday at the Sandy Pebbles course in Ahmeek. Registration begins at 9:30, with a shotgun start at 10:00. The cost is $75.00 per team of three. For information, call the Keweenaw County Probate Court office at 337-1927.
