Kevin Pillar’s single off Jason Foley in the bottom of the 10th inning drove home the winning run, as the Angels shaded the Tigers 6-5 Saturday night. Detroit built a 5-3 mid-game lead, but L.A. scored two in the seventh off Beau Brieske, and one in the eighth off Will Vest to tie the contest. Jake Rogers homered for Detroit. Reese Olson allowed two runs over six innings, and struck out nine.
The Tigers visit the Angels again today. Casey Mize will start against Tyler Anderson. Coverage will begin at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers fell to the Cubs 5-3 Saturday. Ian Happ’s two-run homer off Joel Payamps in the top of the eighth scored the winning runs. Milwaukee starter Tobias Myers gave up three runs over six innings.
The Brewers host the Cubs again this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Kyle Hendricks.
Milwaukee has added reliever Jared Koenig to the injured list. Koenig struck out the side in the eighth inning of Friday night’s game, but reported tightness in his arm after the game. Tendinitis has been diagnosed. Rob Zastryzny has been called up from Nashville to fill in.
There was an off-the-field incident at Saturday’s Brewers game. Eleven people were hurt when an escalator at American Family Field malfunctioned, causing the platform to race downward. Six were hospitalized, including one person with a broken femur.
NHL
The Red Wings added some additional offensive power in the early rounds of yesterday’s NHL Draft. In the second round, they took Max Plante, the son of former NHL player Derek Plante. He played left wing in the United States National Team Development Program, and is headed to Minnesota-Duluth this fall. Their third-round pick was center Ondrej Becher, who excelled for Prince George in the WHL this past season.
In the fourth round, the Wings grabbed goaltender Landon Miller, who played with the OHL Soo Greyhounds last season. They closed the draft by selecting defenseman John Whipple in the fifth round, wing Charlie Forslund in the sixth round, and wing Austin Baker and defenseman Fisher Scott in the seventh round. Baker is a Michigan native, who will play at Michigan State next fall.
Michigan Tech defenseman Chase Pietila was selected in the fourth round by the Penguins.
