Huskies Win GLI – Wednesday Sports Wrap

Great Lakes Invitational

Logan Pietila’s hat trick powered the Michigan Tech hockey team to a 4-2 victory over the University of Michigan in the championship game of the Great Lakes Invitational hockey tournament yesterday. After a scoreless first frame, Pietila tied the contest 1-1 midway through the second period. The Wolverines reclaimed the lead late in the second, but Pietila tied it again early in the third. His final goal of the night with a little more than four minutes remaining in regulation was the game-winner. Alec Broetzman’s empty-netter in the closing seconds closed out the scoring. Matt Jurusik made 35 saves. It’s the 11th GLI title for the Huskies, and their first since 2012.

The freshman Pietila was named the tourney’s Most Valuable Player. Jurusik, Trenton Bliss and Eric Gotz were among those named to the All-Tournament team.

Michigan State won the consolation match, 5-2 over Ferris State.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings broke their six-game losing streak last night by shutting out the San Jose Sharks 2-0Jonathan Bernier made 34 saves. Tyler Bertuzzi’s goal early in the second period was the game-winner. Filip Hronek sealed the win with a late empty-netter.

The Wings visit the Dallas Stars Friday. Coverage will begin at 8:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit played without Andreas Athanasiou, who suffered a lower-body injury last weekend. He’s expected to miss two to three weeks.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons visit the Los Angeles Clippers tomorrow night. Pregame coverage will begin at 10:05 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

There’ll be no changes at the top of the Detroit Lions coaching and management this off-season, but heads rolled in the coaching mid-ranks yesterday. Special teams coordinator John Bonamego, linebackers coach Al Golden, defensive backs coach Brian Stewart, tight ends coach Chris White, strength and conditioning head Harold Nash and assistant strength and performance coach Rodney Hill were all released by the team. Defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni was not included in the purge, despite his unit’s struggles this season.
