In boys high school basketball last night…
– Calumet pounded L’Anse 83-39.
– Chassell edged Hancock 34-33.
– Houghton got past Ewen-Trout Creek 62-60 in overtime. Hunter Richards scored 15 for the Gremlins. Landon Maki scored 25 for the Panthers, who suffered their first loss of the season.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 92-69. Dayne Matson scored 29 for the Lakes, and Arthur Lyons added 25. Devin Schmitz of the Blue Bolts led all scorers with 34.
– Jeffers downed Baraga 67-41.
In tonight’s only boys game, L’Anse entertains Ishpeming.
In last night’s only girls game, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City got past Wakefield-Marenisco 35-29.
On tonight’s girls schedule…

MTU
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams earned wins at Lake Erie College last night. The women’s squad held the Storm to just 10 points in the second half, and cruised to a 65-29 victory. Four Huskies reached double figures in scoring, led by Kylie Moxley with 15.
The men’s team nearly gave up a 19-point lead over the final nine minutes of the game, but held on to beat Lake Erie 65-57. Kyle Monroe scored 23 for the Huskies, and grabbed nine rebounds.
Both MTU teams will play at Ashland University tomorrow.
The Tech hockey team is in Arizona for the first Desert Hockey Classic. The Huskies will open against Connecticut tonight, and will play either Arizona State or Yale on Sunday. Video coverage of the Sunday game will streamed at no charge through the Pac 12 website here.
NMU
Both Northern Michigan University basketball teams lost at Ashland last night. The women’s squad fell 75-49. The men’s team lost 81-75 in overtime.
Both NMU teams will play at Lake Erie tomorrow.
The Northern hockey team skates at Minnesota State tonight and tomorrow night.
Finlandia
The Finlandia women’s hockey team is at the Bruiser Bowl in Adrian this weekend, where they’ll play St. Olaf’s tonight, and Manhattanville College tomorrow. The Finlandia men’s team hosts St. Scholastica tomorrow night at 7:15, and Sunday afternoon at 4:00 at the Houghton County Arena.
Both Finlandia basketball teams play at Minnesota-Morris tonight, and Crown College tomorrow afternoon.
GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines will visit the Marquette Iron Rangers tonight. Tomorrow night, the Wolverines will play the Portage Lake Pioneers. Face-off is at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings skate at San Jose tonight. Face-off is at 10:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Brooklyn Nets Saturday night.
NFL
The NFL playoffs open this weekend with the Wild Card games. Tomorrow, the Chiefs visit the Texans at 4:35, and Bengals host the Steelers at 8:15. On Sunday, the Vikings entertain the Seahawks at 1:05, and the Packers visit Washington at 4:40. Hear all four games on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Nordic Skiing
The 2016 U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships Freestyle distance events yesterday…
– Tad Elliott of Ski and Snowboard Club Vail won the men’s 30k. Adam Martin from Northern Michigan University placed fourth, and Jake Brown sixth.
– Caitlin Patterson of the Craftsbury Green Racing Project won the women’s 20k. She also won the 10k classic on Sunday. Sophie Schimpl from NMU finished 13th.
– Ian Torchia from Northern Michigan University won the men’s 10k. Leo Hipp from NMU placed eighth.
– Hannah Halvorsen from the Sugar Bowl Academy took the women’s 5k. Vivian Hett from NMU placed second, and Caroline Brisbois finished seventh.
