In girls’ high school basketball Friday night, Houghton got past Kingsford 40-34 in overtime.

Brad Ohtonen’s 10 points led a balanced scoring attack for the Gremlins, who took an early lead, and were never challenged. Jack Hyrkas lead the Copper Kings with 11. – Lake Linden-Hubbell remained unbeaten with a 71-35 win over Dollar Bay 71-35.

MTU Hockey Sweeps UAH
The Michigan Tech hockey team exploded for 11 goals Saturday night, and routed Alabama Birmingham 11-1. Both Tanner Kero and Blake Pietila recorded the 100th points of their careers in the game. Kero had two goals and two assists in the game, and Pietila had three assists. Joel L’Esperance, Brent Baltus and Max Vallis also scored twice, as Tech outshot UAB 54-12. It was the 20th win of the season for the Huskies – the first time since the 1987-1988 season that they’ve reached that milestone.

On Friday, Jamie Phillips turned in his third shutout of the season, as the Michigan Tech hockey team blanked the Chargers 5-0. See video highlights of Friday’s game here, and Saturday’s game here.

The 15th-ranked Michigan Tech women’s basketball team cruised to a 74-61 victory over Lake Superior State on Saturday. Danielle Blake led the Huskies with 19 points and nine rebounds.

The men’s team suffered a 66-57 loss to the Lakers. Tech trailed by just a point with six minutes remaining, but LSSU outscored the Huskies 20-12 down the stretch. Ben Stelzer led Tech with 12 points.

NMU Sweeps Alaska
NMU Athletics LogoSami Salminen’s goal with 11 seconds remaining in overtime lifted Northern Michigan University to a 3-2 victory over Alaska-Anchorage Saturday night. On Friday, Derek Dun earned his first career victory in goal, as the Wildcats outpointed the Seawolves 5-3. The sophomore got the surprise appearance because regular netminder Mathias Dahlstrom was injured in a collision just two minutes into the game.

Both Northern basketball teams defeated Northwood Saturday afternoon. The women’s team held the Timberwolves to just 19 points in the second half, and claimed a 63-50 victory. The Wildcats men’s team outscored Northwood 18-9 in overtime to earn an 88-79 win.

Finlandia Hockey Swept
Finlandia Lions New LogoThe Finlandia men’s hockey team was shut out 3-0 at the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday. On Friday, the Lions lost 6-2. The Lions trailed just 2-1 at the close of the first period, after a goal by Devin Smith, but the Raiders scored two goals in the second period, and two more in the third to put the game away.

The Lions’ women’s hockey team remained winless, falling 8-0 to Lake Forest College Friday night. The Foresters outshot the Lions 29-10. On Saturday, Finlandia fell 5-0 to Adrian College. The Lions were outshot 58-12.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team outscored Wisconsin-Marinette 107-83 Saturday afternoon. State were not provided.

Pioneers-Wolverines FeatureGLHL
The Calumet Wolverines pounded the Monroe Blues 13-2 Friday night. Jeff Erkkila, Riley Schreiber and Alex Van Wagner each scored twice. On Saturday, the Wolverines lost 6-3 at Eagle River. Josh Harju scored twice for Calumet.

The score of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game against the Monroe Blues Saturday night was not reported.

NHL – Red Wings Outskate Islanders
Goalie Petr Mrazek rebounded from a couple of rough games, as the Red Wings defeated the Islanders 4-1 Saturday afternoon. Mrazek stopped 21 shots. Detroit has won seven of its last eight games, and is off until a Thursday night game at Colorado. Faceoff is at 9:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

After three months on the sideline, Detroit goalie Jonas Gustavsson shook off some rust in a rehab start with the Grand Rapids Griffins Saturday night. Gustavsson gave up three goals over two periods. He’s scheduled to start for the Griffins again Wednesday, and could rejoin the Red Wings for Thursday’s game.

NBA – Pistons Outscore Rockets
The Pistons defeated the Rockets 114-101 Saturday night. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led Detroit with a season-best 28 points. It was the first victory for the Pistons since losing guard Brandon Jennings for the season to an Achilles tendon injury. The Pistons host the Heat Tuesday night. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Packers Honored
Green Bay Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers was named the National Football League’s Most Valuable Player for the second time Saturday night. He joins Don Hutson and Brett Favre as the only Packers to win the honor twice. Meanwhile, former Packers’ general manager Ron Wolf has been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Wolf guided the Packers back to prominence in the 1990’s, after two decades in obscurity after the Vince Lombardi era.
