The Chicago Cubs scored two late runs, and defeated the Detroit Tigers 5-3 yesterday. Detroit took an early lead, scoring twice in the first inning, and adding a run in the fourth. Chicago tied the game with three runs in the fifth inning off Michael Fulmer. Fulmer completed six innings, and gave up seven hits. The Cubs scored the game-winner off Daniel Stumpf in the seventh, and added an insurance tally when Kyle Schwarber homered off Warwick Saupold in the eighth.

The Tigers wrap up that quick interleague series against the Cubs in Chicago this afternoon. Francisco Liriano will pitch against José Quintana. Pregame coverage will begin at 1:55 on 99.3 The Lift.

Eric Thames’ two-run homer was all the Milwaukee Brewers needed, as they shut out the Minnesota Twins 2-0 last night. Junior Guerra gave up two hits over five innings. Josh Hader allowed just a walk over three frames, and Corey Knebel struck out the side in a perfect ninth.

The Brewers host the Twins again this afternoon. Chase Anderson will start against José Berríos.

The Michigan Tech hockey team will play an outdoor game this winter. The Huskies’ January 18th contest at Bemidji State will be staged on a rink on Lake Bemidji. It’s part of the Hockey Day Minnesota celebration, which will be centered in Bemidji. Four other games will also be played on the lake, including three high school contests, and a match involving the Bemidji State women’s team. Tech’s January 19th game against the Beavers will be played indoors. Temporary bleachers that can hold 3,000 fans will be set up next to the lake.
