In high school football tournament play for Upper Peninsula teams this weekend…
– In eight-man play, Cedarville will face Deckerville this afternoon in the semifinals. The game will be played at Detour High school.
– In the Division Eight Regional game, Forest Park will play Munising tonight at 7:00 at the Superior Dome. The winner will face perennial contender Beal City, which advanced to the semifinals by beating Baldwin 28-0 Friday night.
– In Division Seven, Ishpeming moved into the semifinals by beating Traverse City St. Francis 22-13 Friday night. The Hematites will face Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary in the semifinals at a location yet to be determined.
– In Division Five, Menominee will host Freeland this afternoon at 2:00. The winner will take on defending champion Grand Rapids West Catholic, which ousted Reed City 56-28 Friday night.
MTU Soccer Falls in NCAA Tourney Play
The Michigan Tech soccer team’s season ended with a 2-1 loss to Bellarmine University in the opening round of the NCAA tournament Friday night. Tech trailed 1-0 until Janelle Riedl tied the game on a penalty kick in the 80th minute. Bellarmine’s Emily Hollander slipped the game winner past Jenna Phelps in the 87th minute to win the game for the Knights.
The MTU hockey team is 9-0 for the first time in school history, after defeating Bemidji State 2-1 Friday night. The fifth-ranked Huskies got goals from C.J. Eick and Alex Petan, and another stellar goaltending performance from Jamie Phillips, who stopped 35 shots. The fifth-ranked Huskies skate at Bemidji again tonight.
The Michigan Tech football team wraps up its regular season at home against Lake Erie this afternoon. The Huskies need a win to keep their hopes of an NCAA tournament bid alive. Kickoff is at 1:00 at Sherman Field. The temperature at game time is projected to be 26 degrees, with 15 miles-per-hour winds, and a wind chill of 13-above.
The Tech women’s basketball team opens its season at Minnesota-Duluth tonight.
NMU Hoops Teams Split
The NMU men’s basketball team is playing at the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge this weekend. The Wildcats opened with a 78-57 loss to Lewis Friday night. They’ll take on Indianapolis this afternoon. The Northern women’s team is playing at a tournament at Moorhead State. They pulled out an 81-73 overtime win over Minnesota-Crookston Friday night, and face the host Dragons tonight.
The Northern Michigan University football team entertains Findlay today.
The NMU hockey team has the weekend off.
Finlandia Women’s Hockey Falls
The Finlandia women’s hockey team fell behind early, and lost to Marian University 7-4 Friday night. Brock Nelson had a goal and two assists for the Lions. The women host Marian again this afternoon at 3:00. The men entertain Saint Scholastica this evening at 7:00 and tomorrow afternoon at 4:00. You can get into any of the games free if you bring a nonperishable food donation for the Salvation Army Food Bank.
The Finlandia men’s basketball team opens its season at Lakeland College this afternoon at 3:00. The women’s team begins its season downstate at Hope College this afternoon at 4:00.
NHL – Red Wings Win at Chicago
Luke Glendening had a goal and an assist, as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Blackhawks 4-1 Friday night. Jimmy Howard stopped 26 shots, as the Wings earned their first regulation win at Chicago in their last 12 visits. Detroit will host Montreal tomorrow night.
NBA – Pistons Shut Down Thunder
The Detroit Pistons outscored the Oklahoma Thunder 14-7 in overtime, and earned a 96-89 road victory. The Pistons trailed by nine after the first quarter, but Brandon Jennings scored 25 of his 29 points after halftime to power the comeback. Detroit plays at Memphis tonight. Tip-off is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NFL
The Detroit Lions play at Arizona tomorrow. Kickoff is at 4:25 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
The Packers host the Eagles. That game also begins at 4:25.
MLB
Detroit Tigers’ general manager Dave Dombrowski called outfielder Torii Hunter on Friday, and told him the team would likely not be interested in bringing him back next season. Hunter spent two years with Detroit, and would like to continue playing. He will turn 40 years old next summer.
The Tigers have signed reliever Joel Hanrahan to a minor-league contract, which includes a major-league spring training invitation. Hanrahan was an all-star closer for the Pirates, but hasn’t pitched since he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2013. Detroit signed him last summer, but he wasn’t able to recover enough from the surgery to pitch.
