Huskies Retain Miner’s Cup – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
The Calumet Copper Kings will face Traverse City St. Francis in the Division Six district final game next weekend. St. Francis defeated Elk Rapids 56-17 in their district semifinal yesterday. Calumet advanced with a 6-0 victory over Westwood Friday night. The district final will be played in Traverse City, and will most likely be staged Saturday afternoon, although that has not been confirmed officially. We’ll broadcast the game on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In other games of regional interest…
– In Division Eight on Friday, Ishpeming routed Gwinn 52-6, and West Iron County shut down Rogers City 28-8. The Hematites and the Wykons will meet for the district title next weekend.
– In Division Seven yesterday, Iron Mountain defeated Oscoda 36-14. The Mountaineers will face Roscommon for the district title next weekend.
– In Division Four, Escanaba got past Ludington 27-20 yesterday afternoon. The Eskymos will play Alma for the district title next weekend.
– In eight-man Division One on Friday, Pickford blanked Fife Lake Forest Area 51-0. The Panthers will face Suttons Bay next week.
– In eight-man Division Two, Forest Park eliminated North Central 36-24. Rapid River edged Engadine 20-18. The Trojans and Rockets will play for the district title next week. Cedarville ousted Hillman 44-6 on Friday, and will meet Posen for the district crown next week.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball team concluded its regular season with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-20) victory over Grace Christian University yesterday. Marina Dalton and Kaisa Holmstrom each had a dozen kills. Nicole Anderson had 33 assists and 10 digs, and Shannon Anderson had 12 digs. The Lions will compete in the American Collegiate Athletic Association tournament at Alfred State University in New York next weekend.

The Finlandia football team lost 49-6 at Adrian College yesterday. Baraga’s Dillion Hueckstaedt had 21 tackles, and set a new Finlandia record with 112 for the season. The Bulldogs outgained the Lions 510 to 170 yards.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team opened its season with a 3-1 victory over Wisconsin-River Falls last night. Teddy Randell, Kendall Bolen-Porter and Connor Hannon scored for the Lions. Marcus Gloss stopped 29 shots.

The women’s hockey squad lost 3-0 to St. Catherine in Marshfield, Wisconsin.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech football team claimed the Miner’s Cup for the ninth straight season, with a 35-33 victory at Northern Michigan yesterday. Tech took control with three touchdowns in the second quarter, then held off the Wildcats by stopping a two-point conversion that would have tied the game with two minutes remaining. The Huskies pulled out the stops on offense, with three different players passing for touchdowns, and two scoring on the ground.

The Huskies hockey team lost 6-2 at 14th-ranked University of Wisconsin last night. The Huskies surged ahead early, with goals by Greyson Reitmeier and Brian Halonen, but the Badgers tied the game by the end of the first period, and dominated from there on out. Matt Jurusik made 34 saves.

The NMU hockey team lost to Bemidji State 2-1 last night.

MLB
The Boston Red Sox scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning, and held off the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-6 last night in game four of the World Series. Boston leads the Fall Classic three games to one, and could wrap up the tiitle with a win tonight in L-A.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons suffered their first loss of the season last night, 109-89 to the Boston Celtics. Blake Griffin was held to just seven points. Andre Drummond led the team with 18, but his playing time was again limited by foul trouble. The Pistons will face the Celtics again Tuesday night, in Boston.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Dallas Stars today. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage will begin at 4:40 on KBear 102.3.

NFL
The Detroit Lions entertain the Seattle Seahawks in a 1:00 game this afternoon. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift. The Green Bay Packers visit the Los Angeles Rams in a 4:25 game.
