Huskies Retain Miner’s Cup – Sunday Sports Wrap

MLB – Tigers Eliminated From Playoffs
The Detroit Tigers were officially eliminated from the playoffs Saturday, with a 6-2 loss to the Minnesota Twins. Alfredo Simon gave up four runs over eight innings. Both of Detroit’s runs came in the fourth inning, on a double by Nick Castellanos, and a single by James McCann. The Tigers’ 82nd loss of the season also meant that the team will finish without a winning record for the first time since 2008. Details are here.

The Tigers play their last home game of the season this afternoon against the Minnesota Twins. Randy Wolf will start against Ervin Santana. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Detroit manager Brad Ausmus will return to lead the club next season. General Manager Al Avila cited the team’s improved record in September, and Ausmus’ ability to work with young players, as reasons for bringing him back for the final year of his three-year contract.

The Saint Louis Cardinals scored four runs in the first inning, and cruised to a 5-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers Saturday. Rookie Tyler Wagner struggled through four innings, giving up all five Saint Louis runs. Game details are here.

The Brewers conclude that set against the Cardinals in Saint Louis this afternoon. Tyler Cravy will pitch against John Lackey.

High School
The result of the Team Copper Country U18 hockey squad’s game against the Soo Indians Saturday night was not reported. Team CC will face the Soo again this morning at 11:00 at the SDC.

MTU Retains Miner’s Cup
The 15th-ranked Michigan Tech football team remained unbeaten, with a narrow 24-23 victory over Northern Michigan University in the Miner’s Cup game Saturday night. The Huskies scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to overcome a 10-point deficit, taking the lead on a seven-yard Brandon Cowie-to-David Walter pass with 2:10 remaining. On the game’s final play, Northern attempted a 45-yard field goal, but Ryan LaBerge’s kick was blocked by Tanner Agen and Evan Mayer. Cowie completed 21 of 27 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns. Cowie, John Williams and Kevin Miller combined to rush for 180 yards. Details are here.

The MTU volleyball team defeated Lake Erie 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-16) Saturday. Details are here.

The Huskies soccer team plays at Ohio Dominican today at noon.

Finlandia
The young Finlandia football team continued to struggle, falling to Wisconsin-Stevens Point 77-6 Saturday afternoon. The Lions did take the first lead in the program’s history, when Ronald Brown hit Darrion Robinson with a one-yard pass for the first touchdown in program history on the Lions’ first possession. The score completed a 21-yard drive that had been set up by a 43-yard Tyler Windahl interception return. Details are here.

The Finlandia University volleyball team defeated Silver Lake College 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-19) on Saturday. Details are here. The Lions then beat Great Lakes Bible College 2-0 (14-25, 17-25). On Friday, the Lions opened their own invitational with a hard-fought 3-2 (16-25, 25-16, 25-19, 19-25, 16-14) win over Alverno College. The Lions then lost 3-0 (11-25, 14-25, 7-25) to Maranatha Baptist University.

NHL – Wings Lose in OT
The Detroit Red Wings fell to the Boston Bruins 4-3 in overtime in an exhibition game Saturday night. Tomas Tatar scored his fourth goal of the preseason. Petr Mrazek took the loss in net. Details are here.
