Huskies Keep Miner’s Cup

Finlandia

The Finlandia University volleyball team closed out the Marty Peterson Invitational at Wisconsin-Oshkosh Saturday with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-9, 25-6) loss to Saint Norbert, and a 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-14) defeat at the hands of the host team.

The Finlandia football team lost 44-0 at Kalamazoo College yesterday afternoon. The Hornets offense outgained the Lions 423 yards to 88.

The Lions men’s soccer team blanked Emmaus Bible College 3-0 yesterday. Akwasi Kwarteng scored twice for the Lions, and Chelan Gonzalez scored once. FinnU dominated the field, outshooting the Eagles 41-7.

The women’s team crushed Mount Mary 11-0 yesterday. Kirsten L’Esperance had three goals and five assists, and became the first soccer player in Finlandia history to record 100 career points.

Because of bad weather predicted for today, the Finlandia benefit softball game against Bay College has been moved back to October 20th. Money raised will assist Hancock City Manager Barry Givens in his fight against cancer.

WCHA

The University of Alaska completed a weekend sweep over Michigan Tech with a 2-1 victory last night. The Nanooks scored both of their goals early. Logan Pietila’s short-hander midway through the second period was Tech’s only tally.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team blanked Michigan State University 2-0 yesterday.

GLIAC

The Tech volleyball team completed a weekend sweep with a 3-1 victory over Ashland yesterday afternoon. Olivia Ghormley had 23 kills, and Megan Utlak recorded 23 digs.

Will Ark’s 10-yard scoring strike to Ben Hartley midway through the fourth quarter lifted the MTU football team to a 24-20 victory over Northern Michigan University yesterday, and kept the Miner’s Cup in Houghton for the 10th straight year. Ark also tossed a pair of touchdown tosses to Jacob Wenzlick. He completed 21 of 30 passes for 347 yards.

The Tech soccer team will host Northern Michigan University today at noon.

GLHL

The Marquette Mutineers scored four goals in the third period, and defeated the Calumet Wolverines 8-6 last night. Marquette claims the new Hockeyville Challenge Cup, which will be fought for each year by the two teams, whose arenas have both benefited from the Kraft Hockeyville USA promotion.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost 5-2 to the Toronto Maple Leafs last night. Jacob de la Rose and Darren Helm scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard made 36 saves.

The Wings skate at Vancouver Tuesday night. Pregame coverage will begin at 9:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons continue their exhibition schedule Tuesday night at Philadelphia. Listen for selected Pistons regular-season games again this year on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Washington Nationals took a 2-0 lead over the Saint Louis Cardinals in the National League championship series with a 3-1 victory yesterday afternoon. Game three will be played tomorrow night in Washington.

The New York Yankees opened the American League championship series with a 7-0 win over the Houston Astros last night. That set continues tonight in Houston.

NFL

The Packers and Lions will meet in the Monday night game on 99.3 The Lift.
