Huskies Hoopsters Sweep Panthers – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

Houghton will face Sault Ste. Marie in the Division Three hockey tournament quarterfinals tomorrow. The Blue Devils blanked the Sentinels 3-0 in their regional final last night. Tomorrow’s contest will begin at 1:00 at Lakeview Arena in Marquette. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.

On the final night of girls regular season basketball play last night…
• Houghton fell to Ishpeming 61-50. Eva Gerard had 24 points and 12 rebounds for the Gremlins, and Danica Ryynanen added 16 points. Jenna Maki led the Hematites with 21 points, Janessa Eagle had 19, and Peyton Kakkuri 13.
• Jeffers edged Hancock 40-37. Sara Johnson paced the Jets with 14 points, and Taylor Heinonen added 13. Kay Pietila scored 10 for the Bulldogs.
• Ewen-Trout Creek shut down Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 53-15.
• Chassell overwhelmed Watersmeet 54-13.
• L’Anse fell to Ironwood 46-36.

Boys basketball district titles will be decided tonight…
• Division Three, District 65 – Jeffers plays at Westwood at 6:00.
• Division Four, District 98 – Lake Linden-Hubbell tips off at Chassell at 6:00.
• Division Four, District 97 – Wakefield-Marenisco faces Ironwood at Ewen-Trout Creek at 7:00.
• Division Four, District 99 – Forest Park plays at Norway at 6:00 Central Time.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team routed Davenport University 90-61 last night. The Huskies raced to a 28-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, and never looked back. Tessa Leece led Tech with a career-best 19 points. The win clinched home court advantage in the opening round of the upcoming Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs.

The Tech men’s team also cruised to an easy win over the Panthers, 88-61. Marcus Tomashek scored 29 points.

Both Tech teams will close out their regular campaigns at home tomorrow against Grand Valley State – the women at noon, and the men at 2:00.

Both Northern Michigan teams took Grand Valley State into overtime last night, but wound up losing.

The women’s squad fell 74-67 to the second-ranked Lakers, after overcoming a nine-point fourth quarter deficit to force extra time. Makaylee Kuhn scored 27 for the Wildcats.

The men’s team lost 106-99 after two overtime periods. Max Weisbrod’s jumper with 11 seconds remaining in regulation forced the first extra stanza. The Wildcats took an early seven-point lead in the first overtime, but the Lakers came back, and dominated the second extra period. Weisbrod scored 27.

Both Northern teams will host Davenport University tomorrow.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team wraps up its regular season at home against St. Thomas. Faceoffs are at 7:07 tonight, and 6:07 tomorrow.

Northern Michigan concludes its regular season at home against Bowling Green tonight and tomorrow.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers will visit the Marquette Mutineers tonight.

The Calumet Wolverines visit the Mosinee Papermakers tonight, then host the Mutineers tomorrow at 6:00.

NHL

The Red Wings’ six-game winning streak ended last evening, with a 5-3 loss to the Islanders. Olli Maatta scored twice for Detroit, and Patrick Kane also found the net. Alex Lyon stopped 22 shots, and took the loss in net.

The Wings will visit the Panthers tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 12:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons host the Cavaliers tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers fell to the Red Sox 5-2 yesterday. Starter Reese Olson gave up two runs over two innings. Tyler Holton served up a solo home run in the third inning, and Will Vest surrendered two runs on three hits in the fourth.

The Tigers will face the Phillies this afternoon. Kenta Maeda will make his first spring start for Detroit. Coverage will begin at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers lost to the Rangers 7-5. Joey Ortiz homered.

The Brewers will face the Padres this afternoon. Bryse Wilson will start.
