In high school boys’ basketball last night…
– Houghton raced past L’Anse 87-67. Nate Gockenbach led the Gremlins with 27 points. Justin Routsala added 18. Jonny DesLaurier scored 23 for the Purple Hornets.
– Hancock got past Ewen-Trout Creek 52-47. Hans Stimac led the Bulldogs with 22 points.
– Baraga defeated Chassell 73-50. Brendan Varline, Austin Smith and Lucas Coffey combined for 57 points for the Vikings.
– Ontonagon lost to Republic-Michigamme 64-50.
In girls’ basketball last night…
– Calumet shut down West Iron County 70-30.
In girls’ play tonight…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts Ewen-Trout Creek.

Michigan Tech Hoops Teams Win
The unbeaten Michigan Tech women’s basketball team spotted Findlay a 14-point lead in the first half last night… then stormed back to beat the Oilers 75-60. The Huskies outscored Findlay 45-19 in the second half. Brenna Heise led Tech with a career-best 22 points.
The men’s team got back on the winning track, with a 70-59 victory over Findlay. Tech led by 11 at halftime. The Oilers closed the gap to two points twice in the second half, but never took the lead. Ben Stelzer scored 24 for the Huskies.

Both Tech teams host Wayne State tomorrow. The women’s game begins at 1:00, and the men’s game at 3:00, at the SDC.
The Tech hockey team entertains Minnesota-Duluth tonight and tomorrow night. Faceoffs are at 7:07 at MacInnes Arena.
NMU
The NMU hockey teams skates at Bemidji State tonight and tomorrow night.
Both NMU basketball teams welcome Findlay tomorrow afternoon.
Free Admission to Finlandia Home Games
Finlandia University will offer free admission to all of its home athletic events this weekend.
The men’s hockey team entertains Aurora University tonight at 7:00, and tomorrow afternoon at 5:00 at the Houghton County Arena. The women’s hockey team has the weekend off.
Both basketball teams entertain Saint Scholastica tomorrow. The women’s game starts at 2:00, and the men’s contest at 4:00 at the Paavo Nurmi Center.
Portage Lake Pioneers On The Road
In Great Lakes Hockey League play, the Portage Lake Pioneers visit the Fox Cities Ice Dogs tonight, and the DePere Deacons tomorrow night. The Calumet Wolverines are off this weekend.
NHL – Red Wings Welcome Panthers
The Red Wings host the Panthers tonight. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
The Wings will be without defenseman Danny DeKeyser this weekend. He suffered an upper body injury in in Wednesday’s loss to the Maple Leafs. Xavier Oullette has been called up from Grand Rapids to fill in.
NBA – Pistons
The Pistons play at Phoenix tonight. We’ll join the game in progress after the Red Wings are finished on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the Cardinals gutted out a 12-6 victory over the Rams. Arizona quarterback Drew Stanton left the game in the third quarter with a knee injury. He’ll be evaluated today.
The Lions host the Vikings in a 4:25 game Sunday afternoon. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
The Packers play at Buffalo in a 1:00 game.
MLB: Tigers Trade Porcello for Cespedes
The Detroit Tigers sent starting pitcher Rick Porcello to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for two-time Home Run Derby-winning outfielder Yoenis Céspedes. The Tigers also got reliever Alex Wilson and 19-year-old pitching prospect Gabe Speier in the deal. Both Porcello and Céspedes will be free agents at the end of the season.
To fill Porcello’s spot in the rotation, Detroit sent shortstop Eugenio Suarez and pitching prospect Jonathon Crawford to the Reds, in exchange for Alfredo Simon. Simon won 15 games last season. He’s 33 years old, and will be a free agent at the end of the season.
