Huskies Hockey Sweeps Seawolves – Sunday Sports Wrap

In girls high school basketball yesterday, Baraga defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 61-26.

The regular hockey season wrapped up yesterday, as Jeffers downed Escanaba 5-3. Evan Larson and Matthew Halonen each scored twice for the Jets, and Jonathon Mantilla found the net once.

The hockey playoffs begin Tuesday. Jeffers faces Houghton at 6:00, and Calumet takes on Hancock at 8:00. Our coverage from the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena will begin at 5:35 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University women’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a cold start, and lost to Valley Forge University 69-62 in the semifinals of the American Collegiate Athletic Association tournament yesterday. The second-seeded Lions trailed by 19 with six minutes remaining, then put on a strong run to narrow the gap. Harlee Froberg led FinnU with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

At the annual Dome Tournament in Marquette yesterday, the Finlandia University softball team lost 9-0 to Marian University. The result of the Lions’ game against Edgewood College was not posted. Today, FinnU will face the College of Saint Scholastica at 10:00, and Wisconsin-Superior at 2:00. We will broadcast both games on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

MTU/NMU

The Michigan Tech hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Alaska-Anchorage with a 3-1 victory last night. Brian Halonen, Alec Broetzman and Justin Misiak scored for the Huskies. Matt Jurusik made 21 saves to earn the win.

The NMU hockey squad held on to the Cappo Cup with a 5-3 win over 19th-ranked Lake Superior State University last night.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team’s nine-game winning streak ended abruptly with a 75-46 loss at 11th-ranked Grand Valley State University yesterday afternoon. The Lakers dominated from the start, and held the Huskies to single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters.

The Tech men’s team also fell behind early, and lost 71-53 to GVSU. Trent Bell and Dawson Bilski each scored 12 for the Huskies.

The Northern Michigan University women’s hoops squad earned its 20th victory of the season yesterday, with a 64-42 triumph at Davenport University. The NMU men’s team lost to Davenport, 74-71.

GHL

The Calumet Wolverines outskated the De Pere Deacons 7-2 last night at the Colosseum.

The Portage Lake Pioneers will welcome the Deacons today at noon.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings will host the San Jose Sharks today. Because of Finlandia University softball on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage will start at 2:40 onKBear 102.3.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons won their second straight contest, beating the Miami Heat 119-96 last night. Ish Smith led Detroit with 22 points. The Pistons host the Indiana Pacers tomorrow night.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers opened their Grapefruit League campaign with a 4-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays yesterday. All of Detroit’s runs came in the third inning, off a single by Mikie Mahtook, a double by Jeimer Candelario, and a home run by Niko Goodrum. Former Tigers’ shortstop José Iglesias has signed a minor league deal with the Cincinnati Reds.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost their Cactus league opener, 8-4 to the Chicago Cubs. Corey Ray homered for the Crew. The Brewers will face the Texas Rangers today.
