In high school hockey Saturday…
– Traverse City Central defeated Hancock 7-2. The Trojans built a 4-0 lead in the first period, and were never challenged.
– Houghton fell to Hartland 2-0.
Western Collegiate Hockey Association
The Michigan Tech hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Alaska-Anchorage with a 4-1 victory Saturday. The Seawolves scored first, early in the second period. The Huskies responded with tallies by Tyler Rockwell, Trenton Bliss, Tommy Parrottino and Alec Broetzman. Matt Jurusik stopped 21 shots.
The Northern Michigan University hockey team is off this weekend.
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
Both MTU basketball teams defeated Northland University Saturday.
The women’s team downed the Timberwolves 69-46. Ellie Mackay let the Huskies with 19 points.
The men’s team claimed an easy 93-59 win. Kyle Monroe led a balanced attack with 22 points, and became only the fourth Husky to pass the 2,000 point total in his career.
The NMU women’s team used a strong fourth quarter to pull out a 56-53 victory over Saginaw Valley State Saturday. The men’s team lost to the Cardinals 64-58.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team was outshot by 11th-ranked Milwaukee School of Engineering 36-22 Saturday, but the Lions made their shots count in a 3-1 victory. Jack Giddings, Cale Markham and Teddy Randell scored for the Lions, and Marcus Gloss made 35 saves.
The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost a tough 2-1 decision to Marian University Saturday night. Kait Ryynanen scored for the Lions, and Annah Smiddy kept FinnU in the game with 42 saves. Those teams play again this afternoon at 2:30 at the Houghton County Arena.
The Lions women’s basketball team outscored Wisconsin-River Falls 75-65 Saturday. Katie Lundeen paced Finlandia with 29 points.
Great Lakes Hockey League
The Calumet Wolverines blasted the Marquette Mutineers 7-3 Saturday night. Josh Harju, Rory Anderson and Logan Rastello each had five points.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings’ losing streak reached 11 games last night, as they fell to the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3. Robby Fabri, Filip Hronek and Dylan Larkin scored for Detroit. Jonathan Bernier gave up four goals. Eric Comrie took over in net for the last eight minutes, and stopped four shots. The Pen’s final goal was an empty-netter.
The Wings skate at Winnipeg Tuesday night. Coverage will begin at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
