In high school hockey Saturday…
– Zach Ahola scored five times, as Hancock pounded Novi 11-3. Matt Sanregret added two goals for the Bulldogs.
– Bay Port scored with seven seconds remaining, and defeated Houghton 3-2.
– The result of Calumet’s game against Brighton was not reported.
Friday night…
– Zach Ahola’s goal with 2.1 seconds left in overtime lifted Hancock to a 3-2 victory over Bay Port. The visiting Pirates, who are ranked third in the state of Wisconsin, took an early 1-0 lead in the first period. Hancock tied it early in the third period, when Ahola returned to the ice from a penalty, and scored from the slot as the trailer. Ted Randell’s unassisted goal put the Bulldogs on top a minute later, but Bay Port scored again to set up the overtime. Hancock outshot Bay Port 41-33.
– Calumet’s comeback from a 3-0 first period deficit fell short, and the Copper Kings lost to Novi 4-3.
– Houghton fell to Brighton 2-1 in overtime.
– Jeffers lost at Kingsford 6-2.
In boys’ high school basketball Friday night…
– L’Anse lost at Ishpeming 61-42.

– Dollar Bay edged Hancock 28-27.
– Houghton smothered Lake Linden-Hubbell 61-23.
– L’Anse fell to Stephenson 62-52

– The Chassell game against Ewen-Trout Creek was postponed to Tuesday, January 27th.

MTU Hockey Falls to NMU in OT
After skating to a 3-3 overtime tie on Friday, the Michigan Tech and NMU wound up playing extra time again on Saturday. This time, the Wildcats found the net in the extra period, and claimed a 5-4 victory. Like Friday’s game, the Huskies found themselves trailing by two goals early, driving goalie Jamie Phillips from the game in the first period. Matt Wintjes relieved him. Tech came back to take the lead, but Northern tied the contest with 5:11 to go in the third period, setting up the overtime.

MTU Hoops Sweeps Ashland
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams defeated Ashland Saturday. The women’s team cruised to an easy 63-39 victory. Danielle Blake led the Huskies with 16 points and seven rebounds.
The men’s team trailed by two at halftime, but came on strong in the second half to claim a 79-69 win. Five Huskies scored in double figures, led by Ben Stelzer’s points.
NMU Hoops Sweeps Lake Erie
The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team shut down Lake Erie 72-47 on Saturday. Bre Gaspervich led the Wildcats with 6 points and 13 rebounds. The Wildcats’ men’s team outscored the Storm 21-9 in the final five minutes, and claimed a 62-50 victory. Jordan Perez finished with 17 points for Northern.
Finlandia Men’s Hockey Falls Twice in Minnesota
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision at St. Olaf College Saturday night. Lane King scored the Lions’ only goal. Finlandia was outshot 39-22 in the contest.
Friday night, the Lions lost at Gustavus Adolphus 4-2. Travis Armstrong and Lane King scored for the Lions, who were outshot 35-12.

In Great Lakes Hockey League play, the score of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game against Eagle River was not reported.
NHL – Red Wings Fall to Caps; Howard Hurt
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Washington Capitals 3-1 Saturday night. They also lost starting goalie Jimmy Howard to a groin injury in the first period. Howard was removed from the ice on a stretcher. Coach Mike Babcock had no update on Howard’s condition after the game, and said Howard will return to Detroit for evaluation. Petr Mrazek replaced him. Detroit is already without regular back-up Jonas Gustavsson, who is recovering from a separated shoulder.
The Wings host the Sabres on Tuesday. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NBA – Pistons Cut Down Nets
Brandon Jennings scored all 20 of his points in the second half, as the Detroit Pistons edged the Brooklyn Nets 98-93 Saturday night. Greg Monroe added 16 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. The Pistons have won eight of their last nine games since releasing Josh Smith, and play at Toronto on Monday. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NFL Divisional Playoffs
In Saturday’s NFL Divisional Playoff games…
– Tom Brady connected with Brandon LaFell for the game winning touchdown with just over five minutes remaining, as the Patriots came from behind to edge the Ravens 35-31.
– The Seahawks blew past the Panthers 31-17.
