Huskies Fall in GLI Final – Thursday Sports Wrap

GLI
The University of Michigan scored four unanswered goals, and defeated Michigan Tech 4-2 in the championship game of the 51st Great Lakes Invitational Hockey Tournament last night. The Huskies took an early 2-0 lead on first period goals by Jake Jackson and Brent Baltus, but the Wolverines rallied for three scores in the second period, and sealed the game with an empty-netter in the final seconds. Jamie Phillips made 18 saves. Baltus and Mark Auk were named to the All-Tournament Team.

In the consolation game yesterday afternoon, Robbie Payne’s goal in overtime lifted Northern Michigan University to a 2-1 victory over Michigan State.

Finlandia
Finlandia Lions New LogoBoth Finlandia University basketball teams lost to Lakeland College yesterday afternoon. The women’s team trailed by four points at halftime, but went cold in the second half, and fell 77-46. Mikayla Hakela led the Lions with 13 points. The men’s team started cold, then heated up in the second half. After trailing by 18 at halftime, Finlandia closed the gap to three points with three minutes remaining. The Muskies hit their free throws in the closing minute, and pulled away to win 79-71. Brandon Robinette scored 24 for the Lions.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings return home to face the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight. Face-off is at 6:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Minnesota Timberwolves tonight.
