Huskies Edge Spartans, Face U-M in GLI Final Today – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In girls basketball, yesterday’s scheduled game between  Houghton and Gladstone was postponed. No makeup date has been provided.

GLI
The Michigan Tech hockey team opened the 51st Great Lakes Invitational Tournament with a 3-2 overtime victory over Michigan State yesterday afternoon. Brent Baltus’ goal 3:58 into the extra stanza was the game winner. The Huskies trailed 2-0 as the third period opened, but got on the board when Alex Gillies scored, and tied the game when Jake Lucchini found the net with 1:26 remaining in regulation. Jamie Phillips made 21 saves. See video highlights from the game here.

The University of Michigan edged Northern Michigan University 3-2 in the other semifinal last evening.

The Wildcats and Spartans will meet in the consolation game this afternoon. The Huskies will face the Wolverines in the title match tonight. Faceoff is at 7:00. Both games will be televised by Fox Sports Detroit.

Finlandia
Both Finlandia University basketball teams will host Lakeland College this afternoon. The women’s game tips off at 2:00, and the men’s game at 4:00, at the Paavo Nurmi Center.

NHL
Jacob Trouba scored twice, and Connor Hellebuyck made 33 saves as the Detroit Red Wings lost 4-1 to the Winnipeg Jets last night. Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard was pulled midway through the second period after giving up all four Winnipeg goals. The Wings return home to face the Pittsburgh Penguins tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 6:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons fell to the Knicks 108-96 in New York last night. Ersan Ilyasova led Detroit with 19 points. Brandon Jennings made his first appearance for the Pistons since he ruptured his left Achilles tendon last January. he scored seven points in 16 minutes off the bench. The Pistons host the Minnesota Timberwolves tomorrow night.

NFL
Green Bay Packers fullback John Kuhn has been added to the Pro Bowl roster. It’s his third such honor.
