In boys high school basketball Friday night…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Calumet 67-53.
– Houghton got past Westwood 51-40. Justin Ruotsala and Sean Hyslop each scored 14 for the Gremlins.
– Jeffers defeated L’Anse 58-38.
– Baraga lost at Watersmeet 61-58.
– Ontonagon downed Bessemer 66-54.
– Chassell edged Dollar Bay 50-49.
The girls regular season wrapped up last night, as Ewen-Trout Creek fell to Watersmeet 45-44.
MTU
Joel L’Esperance scored the game-winning goal with 36 seconds remaining in regulation, as the Michigan Tech hockey team edged Alaska 6-5 Friday night. It was L’Esperance’s second goal of the evening. The Huskies took a 4-0 lead in the first period, only to see the Nanooks come back to tie it with five minutes left. Max Vallis also scored twice for MTU, which hosts Alaska again tonight. Face-off is at 7:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. With three games to play, the Huskies are tied with Bowling Green for second place in the WCHA – just two points behind first-place Minnesota State.
NMU
The NMU hockey team lost 3-1 at Lake Superior State Friday night. Those teams play again tonight at the Soo.
FINLANDIA
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Great South Athletic Conference tournament with a 67-53 victory over Agnes Scott College on Friday. Four Lions starters scored in double figures, led by Mikayla Hakala with 17 points. Valerie Rajala added 16. The Lions will face top-seed UC-Santa Cruz at 1:00 this afternoon, as the tournament continues at Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina today.
Finlandia basketball player Julia Daavettila from Dollar Bay has been named to the GSAC All-Conference team. Caitlin Hewitt of the Lions was honored as Freshman of the Year. Haley Makela was named to the All-Sportsmanship team, and Daavettila, Mikayla Hakala and Houghton’s Kelsie Richards were placed on the All-Academic Team.
The Finlandia softball team opened its season with a 14-6 loss to Northland College at the Dome Tournament in Marquette on Friday. Hillary Brewer had three hits, drove in a run, and scored a run for the Lions. Finlandia will face Lake Superior State this morning at 10:00… Marian University today at noon… Edgewood College tomorrow at noon… and Lakeland College tomorrow at 2:00.

The result of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game against the Eagle River Falcons Friday night was not reported. The Calumet Wolverines will entertain the Falcons tonight at 7:30 at the Colosseum. Fans wearing official CopperDog 150 gear can get into tomorrow night’s game free.

The Detroit Red Wings face the Colorado Avalanche in an outdoor game tonight in Denver. Face-off is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons visit the Milwaukee Bucks this evening.
COPPERDOG 150
Defending champion Dennis LaBoda holds the lead after the first stage of the CopperDog 150 dogsled race. LaBoda built a six-minute lead over veteran Frank Moe in the Friday night run from Calumet to Eagle Harbor. Martha Schouweiler is seven minutes back. Keith Aili and Rita Wehseler are about 10 minutes off the pace. Local mushers Chad Grentz, Tom Bauer and Becky Bean are 14th, 15th and 16th respectively. Stage two, between Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor, will be held today. The first musher will leave Eagle Harbor at 9:00.
Lynne Witte holds the lead at the midpoint of the CopperDog 80. She’s three-and-a-half minutes ahead of Mallory Sturmer, who is racing for Deepwoods Husky Dogs out of Bruce Crossing. Among other local mushers, Jerry Trudell of Calumet is in fourth place, Kelly Jo Engle of Atlantic Mine is sixth, Susan Serafini of Hancock is eighth, Shannon Cummings is 10th, MTU student Adam Schmidt is 11th, and 13-year-old Naum Raskind is 12th. The final stage of the CopperDog 80 will be run tomorrow between Copper Harbor and Calumet.
