Huskies Cruise Past LSSU – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey Saturday night…
– Houghton scored three unanswered goals in the third period to down Rochester United 4-2. Wyatt Liston led Houghton with the game-winning goal and two assists.  The Gremlins outshot the Warriors 31-16.
– Calumet outshot Utica Eisenhower 48-16, but needed overtime to claim a 4-3 win. Ryan Nelson and Jake Anderson each had two goals.
– Hancock defeated Escanaba 5-2.
– Jeffers scored first, but Chelsea tallied in all three periods to stop the Jets 3-1 at the Gaylord D-3 Challenge.

Friday…
– Reid Pietila scored all five goals for the Gremlins as Houghton defeated Utica Eisenhower 5-1.
– Calumet scored a goal in each period, and defeated Rochester United 3-1. Ian Carroll saved 28 of 29 Rochester shots to earn the victory, allowing only a power play goal early in the second. Robert Erkkila led the Kings with a goal and an assist.
– Jeffers fell to East Grand Rapids 5-3 at the Gaylord D-3 Challenge.

In high school girls basketball Friday night…
– Houghton fell to Negaunee 59-47. Sloane Zenner scored a personal best 25 points for the Gremlins.
– Calumet shut down Northland Pines 71-35.
– Hancock defeated Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 36-26.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell stopped Ewen-Trout Creek 62-21.
– Ontonagon edged Baraga 38-35.
– L’Anse fell to Westwood 51-42.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team scored four goals in the first seven minutes, and cruised past Lake Superior State 6-2 Saturday night. Alex Petan and Joel L’Esperance each scored twice. Jamie Phillips made 35 saves. On Friday, the Huskies skated to a 1-1 tie at Lake State.

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams play at Wayne State today.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team slipped past Ferris State 3-2 in overtime Saturday night. The Wildcats lost to the Bulldogs 4-2 Friday night.

The NMU women’s basketball team lost 60-42 at Findlay Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats men’s team almost overcame a 14-point halftime deficit, but lost to the Oilers 73-71.

With two players missing because of injuries, the Finlandia University women’s basketball team dropped an 83-58 decision at St. Scholastica on Saturday. Dollar Bay’s Julia Daavettila led the Lions with 23 points and seven rebounds. The Lady Lions lost 79-46 at Wisconsin-Superior Friday night. Daavettila led the Lions with 14 points and five rebounds.

The Finlandia men’s team trailed St. Scholastica by 14 points at halftime. They closed the gap to one point with a minute remaining, but lost 68-66. Terrance Fuller scored 18 for the Lions, and Marcus Geralds added 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Finlandia dropped an 83-76 decision at Wisconsin Superior Friday night. The Lions battled back from an 18-point deficit in the second half, but couldn’t close the gap. Geralds scored 22.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team lost 9-0 at Wisconsin-River Falls Saturday night. The Lions were outshot 48-14. Walker Enstad made a career-high 48 saves on Friday night, but the Lions lost to the Falcons 3-0.

The Finlandia women’s team fell to Hamline University 3-0 on Saturday, and lost at Wisconsin-Eau Claire 8-0 on Friday.

In Great Lakes Hockey League play…
– The Calumet Wolverines lost to the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 3-2 Saturday night. On Friday, the Wolverines defeated the DePere Deacons 4-3 in overtime. Logan Rastello netted the game-winner.
Portage Lake Pioneers Logo Feature– The result of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game Saturday at Mosinee was not reported. The Pioneers lost to the Papermakers 8-3 Friday night. Jay Pietila scored twice.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons defeated the Indiana Pacers 118-96 Saturday night. Six Pistons scored in double figures, led by Reggie Jackson with 21 points. The Pistons will host the Clippers Monday night.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Buffalo Sabres Monday night.

NFL
The Detroit Lions visit the St. Louis Rams this afternoon. Kickoff is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY. The Green Bay Packers host the Dallas Cowboys in a 4:25 game.
