MLB – Hunter, Cabrera Power Tigers to Late Win
Torii Hunter and Miguel Cabrera hit back-to-back homers to lead off the top of the ninth, and the Tigers pulled out an 8-6 victory over the Twins last night. Detroit had rolled up a 6-0 lead through the top of the fifth inning, but Minnesota came back. The Twins scored a run off Max Scherzer in the bottom of the fifth… then three more in the sixth. They tied the game by scoring twice off Joba Chamberlain and Phil Coke in the eighth. The bases were loaded when September callup Kyle Ryan got Edwin Nunez to hit into an inning-ending double play.
The Tigers continue that series at Minnesota tonight. Rick Porcello will start against Ricky Nolasco. Hear the first pitch at 8:10 on FM 99.3 and AM 1400, WCCY.
Kansas City also won, so Detroit’s lead over the Royals in the American League Central Division remains at a game-and-a-half.
Anibal Sanchez threw 25 pitches off a mound yesterday, and said he felt fine afterward. The Tigers’ starter has been out since early August with a strained chest muscle. If he still feels fine today, he’ll likely throw another bullpen session, and then a simulated game, before returning to the Tigers next week. Manager Brad Ausmus says he’s prepared to use Sanchez out of the bullpen.
Brewers Prepare for First-Place Cardinals
The Brewers had yesterday off, and open a series at Saint Louis tonight. Wily Peralta will pitch against Lance Lynn.
Saint Louis and Pittsburgh were also idle yesterday, so Milwaukee continues to trail the Cardinals by five games in the National League Central Division. They’re a game-and-a-half behind the Pirates, who hold the second wild card playoff berth.
NFL – Eagles Boot Colts
In the NFL last night, Codey Parkey’s field goal as time expired lifted the Eagles to a 30-27 comeback win over the Colts. Philadelphia tied the game late in the fourth quarter on a Nick Foles touchdown pass.
