HS Volleyball Season Opens Today – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

The local high school volleyball season begins today…

  • Calumet opens at the Cadillac Invitational.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Jeffers, Chassell, L’Anse, Ontonagon, Ewen-Trout Creek and Baraga will be among the teams competing at Copper Mountain Tourney at Lake Linden.

Houghton and Hancock begin their campaigns at the Kingsford Invitational tomorrow.

The Houghton High School boys soccer team hosts its annual tournament tomorrow.

MLB

The Tigers suffered an ugly 10-2 loss to the Cubs yesterday. Kenta Maeda took over for opener Tyler Holton in the second inning. He hung in through the sixth, giving up six runs on nine hits. Chicago added four in the seventh inning off Joey Wentz. Spencer Torkelson’s two-run homer in the seventh provided all of Detroit’s scoring.

The Tigers move across town to face the White Sox tonight. Keider Montero will pitch against Chris Flexen. Coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Alex Faedo has been placed on the paternity list. Sean Guenther has been brought up from Toledo to fill in.

The Brewers managed just three hits in a 3-0 loss to the Cardinals yesterday. Freddy Peralta turned in five shutout innings. Nick Mears surrendered all three Saint Louis runs in the seventh inning, and took the loss.

The Brewers head to Oakland to play the Athletics tonight. Aaron Civale will start against JP Sears.

Milwaukee has activated Blake Perkins from the injured list. Tyler Black has been sent back to Nashville.

NFL

The Lions wrap up their preseason schedule tomorrow when they host the Steelers. Kickoff is at 1:00. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

The Packers entertain the Ravens in their final preseason tune-up tomorrow.

Watercross

The fifth annual Jeff Moyle Memorial Watercross event begins today at the Lake Linden Campground. Gates open at 4:00, and racing begins at 6:00. The event runs through the weekend. Along with the racing, there will be live music from Split Shyft tonight, and Outlaw’d tomorrow night. The public is welcome. For the full schedule and details, click here
