Michigan Tech is setting up a Middle School Volleyball Development League. The four-week session begins January 13th. It’s for seventh and eighth graders who want to improve their skills. Registration is open until January 6th. For more information, click here.
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
Michigan Tech’s Cassidy Trotter has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. Trotter scored a career-best 23 points in the Huskies’ win over Northern Michigan University Sunday.
MTU has released its 2019 football award winners. Wide receiver Jacob Wenzlick was named the Alan Bovard Most Valuable Player for the second season in a row. Wenzlick was also chosen as the Offensive Back of the Year, and received the Harold Meese Sportsmanship Award. Defensive lineman Nate LaJoie was chosen for the Fred Baird Memorial Outstanding Defensive Player award. LaJoie was also voted Defensive Lineman of the Year, and the Iron Man Award recipient. Travis Tidwell was named Defensive Back of the Year. Glacier Wallington earned the Daniel Dopp Memorial Special Teams Award. Jeremy Bell is the Offensive Lineman of the Year. He also received the Ted Kearly Award for the second straight year. That goes to a player who exhibits passion, pride, and integrity on and off the field. Quarterback and punter Will Ark was named Outstanding Offensive Player. Linebacker Marshael Ryan received the Omer LaJenunesse Award for Scholastic Achievement. Defensive lineman Samuel Kinne was this year’s Freshman of the Year for Tech.
Finlandia
Both Finlandia University basketball teams are in Florida for the Orlando Classic. Both teams will face Hope College tonight – the women at 5:00, and the men at 7:00.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight. Coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons gave up 43 points in the first quarter, and lost 133-119 to the Washington Wizards last night. It’s the most points Detroit has surrendered in a regulation-length game since 1995. The Pistons played without Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond. Drummond is recovering from an allergic reaction that has affected his eyes. Griffin will undergo an MRI today to see what’s causing the soreness in the knee he had surgery on after last season. Markieff Morris led Detroit with 22 points.

NFL
In the NFL last night, the New Orleans Saints defeated the Indianapolis Colts 34-7. Saints quarterback Drew Brees threw for four touchdowns, and passed Drew Brees to became the NFL’s career leader with 541 TD passes.
