Howell Bests Houghton for MacInnes Crown – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School
Howell took the title at the annual MacInnes Holiday Classic last night, defeating Houghton 3-2 in the championship match at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The visiting Highlanders built an early 2-0 lead. Brendan Erickson’s goal in the second period narrowed the gap, but Dominic Girardin’s goal midway through the second frame proved to be the eventual game-winner. Jiseung Choi again drew the Gremlins to within one late in the second, but neither team would score again. Jimmy Pietila took the loss in net. Howell’s Leander Daavettila was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. It’s the first time in 38 years that a team from the Lower Peninsula has won the Classic.

The consolation match ended early because of the mercy rule, as Calumet blanked Hancock 8-0. Brent Loukus scored four times for the Copper Kings – three times in the second period. Sam Erkkila, Josh Vandenburg, Gabe Coppo and Rylan Anderson also found the net. Dean Loukus had three assists. Alex Studebaker stopped 11 shots to earn the shutout in goal.
