Houghton Wins Inaugural Bostwick Tourney – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

At the first John Bostwick Memorial Baseball Tournament at Houghton Saturday…
• Houghton got past Westwood 5-3 in the first semifinal.
• Hancock blanked Calumet 10-0 in the second semifinal.
• The Gremlins used a late surge to defeat Hancock 8-4 in the championship game.

In softball Saturday…
• Houghton defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 10-3. The Lakes scored three quick runs in the top of the first inning, with help from a Payton Goldsworthy home run. The Lakes collected just two hits after that, as Estella Soumis pitched five innings of shutout relief. The Gremlins broke the game open with six runs in the third inning, powered by doubles from Brynn Arko and Lexi Burns, and a Soumis triple. Clea Ollenkato homered in the fourth.
• Houghton downed Westwood 9-5. Kenzie Collard had four hits for the Gremlins. Ollenkato and Romi Mattson each had two.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell scored three runs in the top of the first, and went on to defeat Westwood 5-1.

The Houghton girls soccer team won a tournament at Marquette Saturday, defeating the Marquette JV 3-0 and Iron Mountain 5-0.

NHL

In the NHL tournament…
• The Oilers clobbered the Canucks 5-1 Saturday night. That Western Conference series is tied 3-3, and will be decided Monday. The winner will face the Stars for the Western Conference championship beginning Thursday.
• The Panthers and Rangers will open the Eastern Conference championship series Wednesday.

NBA

In NBA Conference semifinal play last evening…
• P.J. Washington Jr. sank two free throws with two seconds remaining to lift the Mavericks over the Thunder 117-116. Dallas wins that series 4-2, and advances to the Western Conference championship series.

Today…
• The Knicks host the Pacers. That Eastern Conference semifinal series is tied 3-3.
• Nuggets welcome the Timberwolves. That Western Conference semifinal set is tied 3-3.

MLB

The Tigers blasted the Diamondbacks 8-3 Saturday. Jack Flaherty pitched five innings of shutout ball, but tired and allowed a pair of runs in the sixth. Detroit was held scoreless through six frames, but exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh, giving Flaherty his first win of the season. Javier Báez started the rally with an RBI double, and Wenceel Pérez blasted a bases-loaded triple. Báez had four hits, and Gio Urshela added three.

The Tigers play at Arizona again today. Matt Manning will start against Jordan Montgomery. Coverage will begin at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

William Contreras’ three-run homer off Justin Verlander in the top of the fifth sealed the Brewers’ 4-2 victory over the Astros Saturday. Bryse Wilson allowed both Houston runs before leaving midway through the fifth. Four relievers allowed just three hits over the final four innings.

The Brewers play at Houston again this afternoon. Colin Rae will start against Spencer Arrighetti.
