High School
Houghton claimed the regional hockey title last evening, holding off Hancock for a 4-2 victory. The Gremlins built a 4-0 lead, with first period goals from Mike Maillette and Noah Kriepke, and second period tallies from Tanner Flachs and Jace Deforge. The Bulldogs bounced back, with goals from Bennett Sturos and Bryce Hanner, but could get no closer as the game ended with a scoreless third period. Bryant Lee earned the win in net, as Houghton outshot Hancock 43-25.
The Gremlins will face either Marquette or Sault Ste. Marie in the state quarterfinals Saturday at 1:00 at Lakeview Arena in Marquette. The Sentinels and Blue Devils will play their regional final tonight, after having been snowed out last night. Quarterfinal coverage will begin at 12:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
In boys basketball district tournament semifinals last night…
• In Division Three, Jeffers routed Calumet 64-15. The Jets held Calumet to just two points in the first quarter, and rendered them scoreless in the third. Levi Frahm led the Jets with 17 points, and Matthew Schutz added 11. Micah Pieti scored six for the Copper Kings. The Jets will play at Westwood for the district championship tomorrow at 6:00. The Patriots defeated Ishpeming 65-39 in their semifinal contest last night.
• In Division Four, District 98, Lake Linden-Hubbell ousted Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 64-43. Chassell dispatched L’Anse 78-38. Oliver Campbell led the Panthers with 27 points, Kalvin Kytta added 16 and Mason Loukus had 12. The Panthers will host the Lakes for the title game tomorrow night at 6:00.
• In Division Four, District 97 – Wakefield-Marenisco ended Ontonagon’s season 49-29. Ironwood dispatched Ewen-Trout Creek 36-28. The Cardinals and Red Devils will play for the district title tomorrow at 7:00 at Ewen-Trout Creek High School.
• In Division Four, District 99 – Norway smothered Watersmeet 84-24. Forest Park stopped North Dickinson 66-50. The Trojans and Knights will play for the title tomorrow at Norway at 6:00 Central Time.
On the final night of girls regular season play tonight…
• Houghton entertains Ishpeming. It’s Senior Night, and fans can shoot hoops with the Gremlins after the game. The JV contest will begin at 5:00, with the varsity game around 6:30.
• Hancock plays at Jeffers.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City visits Ewen-Trout Creek.
• Chassell journeys to Watersmeet.
• L’Anse travels to Ironwood.
College Basketball
Both Michigan Tech teams entertain Davenport University tonight – the women at 5:30, and the men at 7:30.
Both Northern Michigan teams welcome Grand Valley State.

The Red Wings entertain the Islanders tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons host the Cavaliers tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
MLB
The Tigers outscored the Pirates 5-3 in a Grapefruit League contest yesterday. Tarik Skubal tossed two scoreless innings, helped by a leaping highlight-reel catch by Parker Meadows in deep center field. Alex Lange gave up three runs on two home runs in the third. In a game in which many of the Tigers’ regulars were rested, Detroit’s comeback was powered by homers from Bligh Madris, Anthony Bemboom and Wenceel Pérez.
The Tigers will face the Red Sox this afternoon. Reese Olson will start for Detroit.
The Brewers lost to the Cubs 6-1 yesterday. William Contreras doubled home Milwaukee’s only run in the fifth inning.
The Brewers will face the Rangers this afternoon. Joe Ross will start.
