High School
The Houghton High School volleyball team began its season with a win at the Sault Area High School Varsity Volleyball Invitational Saturday. In pool play, the Gremlins defeated Mackinaw City, split with Inland Lakes, and dropped two sets to Petoskey. In bracket play, Houghton eliminated Marquette (27-25, 25-14), then Sault Ste. Marie (25-21, 25-18), and claimed the title by defeating Petoskey (25-23, 26-25).
Results from Baraga’s games at the West Iron County Tournament were not reported.
MLB
The Tigers squeezed past the Angels 4-3 Saturday. Tyler Alexander gave up single runs in each of the first three innings, then settled down to complete six frames, and earn the win. Victor Reyes singled home Jeimer Caldelario in the bottom of the fifth with the winning run.
The Tigers host the Angels again this afternoon. Eduardo Rodriguez will start against Shohei Ohtani. Coverage begins at 1:20 on 99.3 The Lift.
Jonathan Schoop left yesterday’s game after suffering an ankle injury while trying to avoid a tag at the plate in the second inning. He’s considered day-to-day.
Willson Contreras’ RBI single off Peter Strzelecki in the bottom of the 11th inning gave the Cubs a 6-5 victory over the Brewers Saturday. Chicago had forced extra innings with a run off Devin Williams in the bottom of the ninth. Each team scored one in the 10th. Milwaukee plated one in the top of the 11th. The Cubs tied it with a Patrick Wisdom double on Strzelecki’s first pitch in the bottom of the 11th. Contreras’ game-winner came with two outs.
The Brewers visit the Cubs again this afternoon. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Justin Steele.
NFL
The Lions edged the Colts 27-26 Saturday. Godwin Igwebuike’s two-yard plunge with four minutes remaining was the game-winner. Indianapolis scored a touchdown in the closing seconds, but their attempt at a two-point conversion to win the contest failed. Tim Boyle and David Blough split time at quarterback, and each threw for a touchdown.
Biking
Houghton’s Mattison Brady took top honors at the Calumet Electronics Great Deer Chase mountain bike race at the Swedetown Trails Saturday. Brady finished the 30-mile course 99 seconds ahead of Samuel Kilpela of Atlantic Mine. It was the second straight year in which they finished first and second. Ethel Karinen of Calumet turned in the fastest women’s time.
In the 15-mile race, Henry Jacobson of New London, Wisconsin crossed the finish line first, 23 seconds faster than A.J. Kangas of Marquette. Sam Paternoster of Marquette won the women’s division.
In the youth races, Logan Grim of Marquette won the four-mile event, and Rohan Borth of Ironwood claimed the two-mile event.
