Houghton Volleyball Falls in Semis at Kingsford Tourney – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball…

  • Houghton fell in the semifinals of the Kingsford Invitational Saturday. The Gremlins won their pool, defeating Iron Mountain and Bark River Harris and splitting with Sault Ste. Marie. Houghton dispatched Hancock 2-1 (25-22, 14-25, 15-13) in a quarterfinal match, but fell to Forest Park 2-0 (23-25, 17-25) in the semis. On the day, Jacey Sleeman had 11 kills, 7 aces, and 13 digs. Laney Johnson had 6 aces, 19 digs, and 4 blocks. Chloe Serafin recorded 19 kills, 4 aces, 10 digs, 8 blocks.
  • The Bulldogs broke even in pool play at the tourney, falling to Kingsford 2-0 (14-25, 24-26), tying Manistique 1-1 (22-25, 25-21) and defeating North Dickinson 2-0 (25-17, 25-9).
  • Calumet opened the Cadillac High School tournament Friday with 2-0 wins over Inland Lakes (25-8, 25-13) and Clio (25-17. 25-19). The Copper Kings then split with McBain 1-1 (25-18, 21-25), and fell to Elk Rapids 2-0 (20-25, 18-25).

The Houghton soccer team won their first games as an officially recognized varsity squad on Saturday, earning the title at their own tournament. The Gremlins defeated Iron Mountain 6-1, downed Escanaba Bayside 4-2, and dispatched Copper Country Christian 7-2. 

MLB

The Tigers blasted the White Sox 13-4 Saturday. Detroit scored nine runs over the first four innings, then tacked on four more in the ninth. Matt Vierling, Colt Keith and Zach McInstry homered. Jake Rogers had three hits, drove in three runs, and scored twice. Tarik Skubal struggled, giving up three runs on eight hits over five innings, but still earned his 15th win of the season.

The Tigers visit the White Sox again today. Beau Brieske will open against Jonathan Cannon. Coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers outslugged the Athletics 9-5. Jake Bauers homered. Colin Rea claimed his 12th win of the season, pitching into the seventh, and giving up four runs.

The Brewers play in Oakland again this afternoon. Frankie Montas will start against Joey Estes.

NFL

The Lions wrapped up their preseason schedule with a 24-17 victory over the Steelers Saturday. Jermar Jefferson scored on runs of one and seven yards. Hendon Hooker completed 12 of 20 passes for 114 yards and one touchdown.

Detroit opens the regular season with a Sunday night contest against the Rams on September 8th. Hear all of the Lions games on 99.3 The Lift.

The Packers tuned up for the regular season with a 30-7 romp over the Ravens. Michael Pratt connected on eight of 12 pass attempts for 80 yards and a touchdown. Anthony Johnson, Jr. picked up a fumble and ran 24 yards for a score.

Green Bay starts their regular campaign at Philadelphia with a Friday night contest September 6th.
