High School
Houghton and Livonia Stevenson will play for the title, as the MacInnes Holiday Hockey Classic concludes today at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
The Gremlins held off Calumet 7-4 in yesterday’s first semifinal. The Copper Kings hung tough with the Gremlins, and trailed by just one goal in the third period before a late flurry gave Houghton the win. Brody Donnelly had a hat trick for the Gremlins, and Jace Deforge, Connor Arko, Jack Rudack and Jay Halonen also scored. Arko and Jack Sayen each had three assists. Dylan Crouch, Brendan Boberg, Nathan Londo and Luke Hamlin found the net for Calumet. Brycyn Nettel got the win in net, as the Gremlins outshot the Kings 45-22.
Stevenson built an early lead, and held off Hancock 5-4. Kirby Storm, Tyler Axford, Tevon Stukel and Jackson Sintkowski scored for the Gremlins. The Spartans got two goals from Owen Hall, and one each from Dawson Wallis, Connor Buchanan and Andrew Clark.

College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team opens the Great Lakes Invitational against sixth-ranked Western Michigan University tomorrow at 3:30. Top-ranked Michigan State will play Northern Michigan University in the other semifinal at 7:07. The consolation and championship matches will be staged on Monday.
NBA
The Pistons visit the Nuggets tonight.
Pistons Hall-of-Famer Isaiah Thomas has been diagnosed with Bell’s palsy, a neurological disorder that produces partial paralysis of one side of the face. In most cases, Bell’s palsy resolves itself, typically over a six-month span.
NHL
A change in coaches did not produce a change in the Red Wings’ fortunes, as they fell 5-2 to the Maple Leafs in Todd McLellan’s debut on the bench. Detroit’s goals from Lucas Raymond and Simon Edvinsson came in the third period, long after the game had gotten out of hand. Cam Talbot gave up five goals on 21 shots over the first two periods, and was replaced by Alex Lyon.
The Wings have lost four straight, and host the Capitals tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 4:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers outscored the Calumet Wolverines 8-5 in the first game of their weekend home-and-home series last night. The teams will meet again this evening at 7:30 at the Colosseum.
NFL
There are three NFL games today…
- The Patriots welcome the Chargers at 12:30.
- The Bengals host the Broncos at 4:15.
- The Rams host the Cardinals at 7:45.

MLB
The Tigers have bolstered their infield by signing former Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres. It’s a one-year deal worth $15 million. Torres is a two-time All-Star, although his production sagged a bit last season. He’s expected to take over at second base, with Colt Keith moving to first base. After struggling last season, Spencer Torkelson will be competing for a back-up role, and time as a designated hitter.
