In boys high school basketball action Friday night…
– Houghton defeated Hancock 45-37 in the annual Wing Ding game. The victory clinched the WestPAC title for the Gremlins.
– Calumet defeated West Iron County 57-48.
– Unbeaten Lake Linden-Hubbell crushed L’Anse 78-24. Arthur Lyons scored 31 points for the Lakes.
– Chassell outscored Jeffers 72-57. Hunter Rautiola scored 27 for the Panthers.
– Baraga shut down Republic-Michigamme 38-19. Brendan Varline scored 20 for the Vikings.
– The Ontonagon at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City game was postponed because of the weather. No make-up date has been provided.
In high school hockey Friday night…
– Cory Tourtillott’s power play goal in the first period was the only score of the game, as Hancock edged Houghton 1-0 in the annual Wing Ding game.
– L’Anse defeated Ashwaubenon 5-1. Kyle Lake had a hat trick and an assist for the Purple Hornets.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team lost 5-1 at Ferris State Friday night. Those teams play again tonight in Big Rapids.
Both NMU basketball teams play at Hillsdale today.
Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s basketball team pulled out an 81-78 victory over Crown College Friday night. The Lions took the lead for good in the seesaw battle when Terrance Fuller sank a jumper with 2:22 remaining. The gap closed to a single point when Crown’s Josh Volness hit a three-pointer with 14 seconds to go, but Marcus Geralds converted two free throws a few seconds later to seal the win. Brandon Robinette led the Lions with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Jordan LaPlant added 19 points.
The Finlandia women’s team opened a big early lead, but went cold in the second half, and dropped a 65-63 heartbreaker to Crown College on Friday. The Lions were up by 15 at halftime, and still led by six at the end of the third quarter. The Lions scored just nine points in the fourth quarter though, and Desiree Davis’ layup with six seconds remaining gave the game to the Storm. Julia Daavettila and Brooke Turin each scored 12 for the Lions.
Both Finlandia teams host Minnesota-Morris today at the Paavo Nurmi Center. The men’s game starts at 4:00, and the women’s contest at 6:00.
The Finlandia men’s hockey team lost 6-2 at Lake Forest College Friday night. Cam Wirick and Thomas Clayton scored for the Lions, who skate at Lake Forest again today.
The Finlandia women’s hockey team fell 6-2 at St. Norbert College Friday night. Natasha Kern and Kimberly Harter scored for the Lions. Former Keweenaw Storm player Jessica Schlaff scored one of St. Norbert’s goals, and another former Storm member, Selena Stromer, had two assists. Those teams skate again today in De Pere.
GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines couldn’t overcome an early 3-0 deficit, and fell 7-4 to the Mosinee Papermakers Friday night. Joe Hyrkas scored twice for Calumet. The Portage Lake Pioneers will host the Papermakers this evening at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 in a shootout Friday night. Jonathan Ericsson and Pavel Datsyuk scored for the Wings. Petr Mrazek made 19 saves. The Wings host the Boston Bruins tomorrow afternoon. Face-off is at 3:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers have traded outfielder Khris Davis to the Athletics. In exchange, they get highly-ranked catching prospect Jacob Nottingham, and pitching prospect Bubba Derby.
