Houghton Sweeps WestPAC XC Honors – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…

  • Houghton fell to Kingsford 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-23). Sophia Hebert had five kills and two blocks, Chloe Serafin five kills and four blocks, Eva Gerard four kills and four aces, and Emmy Pietila 10 digs.
  • Calumet swamped Gwinn 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-9).
  • Jeffers swept Lake Linden-Hubbell 3-0 (25-7, 25-19, 25-19). For the Jets, Mia Nordstrom had 13 kills, three blocks and 13 digs; Taylor Heinonen 11 assists, two aces and six digs; Reegan Kinnenen 10 digs and three kills; and Liz Halonen 10 assists. For the Lakes, Cleo Milkey had six kills, Ashlyn Steves eight digs.

  • L’Anse fell to West Iron County 20-14 in the Purple Hornets’ homecoming game.

In football tonight…

  • Houghton entertains Gladstone. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
  • Calumet visits Hancock. Coverage will start at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell travels to Gogebic.
  • Ontonagon hosts North Central at the Ewen Field.

Both Houghton cross country teams earned easy victories at the WestPAC championships yesterday…

  • The boys claimed five of the top eight finishes, with Birk Seagren medaling. Calumet finished fourth, and Hancock sixth.
  • The girls took five of the top six positions, with Tessa Rautiola placing first. Hancock finished second, and Calumet fourth.

The Gremlins dominated the conference honors. Both teams were confirmed as conference champions. Seagren and Rautiola were honored as Runners of the Year, and Traci Welch was named Coach of the Year.

At the Copper Mountain Conference meet yesterday…

  • Ewen-Trout Creek took the girls title, with Baraga second and Chassell third. Aubrey Smith of Ironwood medaled.
  • Jeffers claimed the boys crown, with Dollar Bay-Tamarack City third, and Chassell fourth. Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta took first individually.

The Houghton boys soccer team routed Cheboygan 9-0 in their state tournament opener. The game was called after the first half. Ethan Heckel had three goals to increase his season total to 23. Oliver Pap also scored three times. The Gremlins will play at Grayling Tuesday. The Mountaineers eliminated Boyne City 3-1.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 17-25, 15-25) decision at Northern Michigan last night. Rachel Zurek led the Huskies with 16 kills. Tess Hayes had 41 assists, and Amelia Albers 19 digs. The Wildcats recorded a season-high 13 aces.

Northern will entertain Roosevelt University tonight.

The Huskies host Roosevelt tomorrow at 2:00. 

College Football

The MTU football team entertains Davenport University tomorrow at noon.

The NMU football squad plays at Grand Valley State tomorrow night.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team opens its season at home against Alaska. Faceoffs are at 7:07 tonight, and 6:07 tomorrow.

Northern Michigan begins its hockey season on the road at 12th-ranked Colorado College tonight and tomorrow.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team hosts Northern Michigan this afternoon at 4:00.

The NMU men’s soccer team plays at Davenport this evening.

NHL

The Red Wings opened their season with an unsightly 6-3 loss to the Penguins last night. Alex DeBrincat had two goals and an assist for Detroit. Ville Husso gave up four goals on 14 shots, and was replaced early in the second period by Cam Talbot.

The Wings host the Predators tomorrow. 

NBA

The Pistons play a preseason game at Phoenix tonight. Listen for selected Pistons broadcasts again this season on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers fell 5-4 to the Guardians yesterday. Wenceel Pérez’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth gave Detroit a 3-2 lead, but David Fry’s two-run pinch-hit homer off Beau Brieske quickly put the Guardians back on top. Fry bunted home a run in the top of the ninth, which became the game-winner after the Tigers plated one in the bottom of the inning.

That American League Divisional Series will be decided tomorrow in Cleveland. Tarik Skubal is in line to start for Detroit. The start time for that game has been moved back. Because of college football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage will begin at 7:40 on KBear 102. The winner of that game will face the Yankees for the American League pennant. New York eliminated Kansas City 3-1 last night.

Kerry Carpenter limped out last night’s game in the sixth inning with what manager A.J. Hinch later described as a hamstring injury. He’ll be examined today.

The Padres and Dodgers will decide their National League Divisional Series in Los Angeles tonight. The winner will take on the Mets for the National League pennant.

NFL

In last night’s NFL contest, the 49ers outscored the Seahawks 36-24. 

The Lions play at Dallas in a 4:25 game Sunday on 99.3 The Lift.

The Packers host the Cardinals in a 1:00 contest Sunday.

In the Sunday night game, the Bengals visit the Giants on 99.3 The Lift.
