• Houghton entertains Kingsford.
Houghton dominated the WestPAC track meet yesterday at Gwinn.
• The girls eked out a narrow win over Negaunee. Calumet finished seventh, and Hancock placed eighth. Houghton’s Lillian Williston won the shot put and discus throw, and the girls 4×800 relay team finished first. Hancock’s Maari Brey won the high jump.
• The boys easily outscored Negaunee. Calumet placed sixth, and Hancock ninth. Houghton got individual wins from Cade Holombo in the 200-meter dash, Donovan Dueweke in the 400-meter run, Eric Weiss in the 3200-meter run, and the 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams. Calumet’s Dryden Nelson won the 100-meter dash.

Softball
The Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball League began last night.
• At Miller Memorial Field in Laurium, A&S Industrial/Lokus Tech stopped Downtowner Two 24-7, and then beat Pat’s Foods/Buckos 29-9.
• At the Hancock Driving Park, McGann’s/Northern Auto defeated Auto Pro/Thermoanalytics 26-6, and then downed Koppers 22-8.
College Baseball
Two Finlandia University baseball players have been honored by the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Joe Galindo was an honorable mention on the all-conference team. Nik Geiser was named to the all-sportsmanship team.
College Football
Houghton High School football standout Nathan Erva will play for Finlandia University. Erva was an All-West PAC first team, and All-U.P. first team selection last fall.

• The 76ers smothered the Wizards 120-95. Philadelphia leads that series 2-0.
• The Knicks stopped the Hawks 101-92. That series is tied 1-1.
• The Jazz outscored the Grizzlies 141-129. That set is tied 1-1.

NHL
In the NHL playoffs…
• The Islanders dispatched the Penguins 5-3. New York wins that series 4-2.
• The Lightning blanked the Panthers 4-0. Tampa Bay wins that set 4-2.
• The Wild shut out the Golden Knights 3-0. That series is tied 3-3.

MLB
Robbie Grossman’s sacrifice fly drove in Niko Goodrum in the bottom of the eighth inning, as the Detroit Tigers shaded the Cleveland Indians 1-0 last night. Four Detroit pitchers combined to throw the shutout. José Ureña pitched into the sixth. José Cisnero, Michael Fulmer and Gregory Soto completed the effort, with Fulmer getting the win, and Soto the save.
The Tigers host the Indians again this afternoon. Matthew Boyd will start against Shane Bieber. Coverage begins at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit catcher Grayson Greiner has begun a rehab stint at Toledo. He’s recovering from a hamstring strain.
Victor Caratini’s RBI single off Brent Suter in the top of the 10th inning gave the San Diego Padres a 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers last evening. Eric Lauer turned in a good start for Milwaukee, giving up a run on four hits over six innings. He also provided the Crew’s only run, with a solo homer in the third.
The Brewers entertain the Padres again this afternoon. Adrian Houser will pitch against Ryan Weathers.
Milwaukee has designated pitcher Josh Lindblom for assignment. Lindblom is in the second season of a three-year, $9 million contract. Team officials say he has agreed to accept a minor league assignment if no team claims him off waivers.
