Both Finlandia University soccer teams begin their seasons with home matches today. The men’s team hosts Concordia-Wisconsin at 3:00, and the women’s squad entertains Northland University at 5:00. Coverage of both games will begin at 2:45 on the Voice of Finlandia Athletics, 99.3 The Lift.
College Baseball
The Finlandia baseball team has added two new recruits. Tommy Barber is an infielder from Hamburg, New York. He’s transferring in from Finger Lakes Community College. Mike Badillo is an outfielder from Robstown, Texas, who is transferring in from Jarvis Christian College.
MTU
Michigan Tech has named Samantha Terry as its new Director of Athletic Operations. Terry played college basketball at Wisconsin-Green Bay under former Huskies’ head coach Kevin Borseth. She takes over for longtime Huskies administrator Alane Isaacson, who recently retired.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers lost their fourth straight game last night, 9-3 to the Oakland A’s. Tarik Skubal struggled through five innings, giving up six runs on seven hits. Robbie Grossman, Dustin Garneau and Derek Hill homered for Detroit.
The Tigers host the A’s again tonight. Wily Peralta will start against James Kaprielian. Because of Finlandia soccer on 99.3 The Lift, Tigers coverage will begin at 6:50 on KBear 102.3.
The Milwaukee Brewers struck early, and cruised past the San Francisco Giants 6-2 last night. All of Milwaukee’s runs came over the first four innings. Lorenzo Cain homered. Brandon Woodruff allowed a run on six hits over six frames, and struck out eight.
The Brewers play at San Francisco again tonight. Brett Anderson will pitch against Kevin Gausman.
After his recent release by the Tigers, the Brewers have signed infielder Renato Núñez to a minor league contract.
NFL
The Detroit Lions have added a wide receiver. The club sent two late-round draft choices to the Denver Broncos to get Trinity Benson. They also get one of Denver’s late-round picks. Benson was an undrafted free agent out of Division II East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma in 2019. He spent two seasons on the Broncos’ practice squad, and had impressed observers during training camp this year.
The Lions’ initial 53-man roster for this season includes no kickers. Candidates Randy Bullock and Zane Gonzalez were both released yesterday, after struggling in training camp. Detroit will look for new candidates among those released by other teams.
The Green Bay Packers are still looking for a punter. They released J.K. Scott yesterday. Green Bay kept just two quarterbacks on their roster – Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love. Kurt Benkert was released, but could be re-signed if he clears waivers.
