In high school volleyball last night…
• Houghton shut down Negaunee 3-0.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell v Wakefield-Marenisco – no report
• Chassell v Jeffers rescheduled to October 14th.
• Baraga downed L’Anse 3-1 (16-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-19).
• Ewen-Trout Creek blanked Watersmeet 3-0.
In volleyball tonight…
• Hancock plays at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.
• Ewen-Trout Creek visits Bessemer.
In cross country yesterday, the Houghton boys and girls both ran to victory at the Hancock Invitational.
On the girls side, the Gremlins took four of the top 10 positions, with Ingrid Seagren second, Paige Sleeman third, and Autumn Eles fifth. Hancock’s Sierra Driscoll placed fourth. Ishpeming freshman Lola Korpi was the individual winner. In the team standings, Hancock was second, Calumet third, Chassell fourth, and Dollar Bay-Tamarack City fifth.
The Houghton boys also took four of the top 10 slots, with Eric Weiss finishing a fraction of a second better than Ewen-Trout Creek’s Jonah Nordine for individual honors. Brandon Peterson of the Gremlins placed fourth. Ishpeming claimed second place in the team competition, with Dollar Bay-Tamarack City third, and Jeffers fourth.

Casey Mize struggled with control, as the Detroit Tigers lost to the Cleveland Indians 10-3 last night. Mize gave up two home runs to José Ramírez, and left as the Indians scored four runs in the fourth inning. Cleveland added five more runs off Jordan Zimmermann later in the game. Willi Castro hit a late three-run homer for Detroit.
The Tigers continue that home series tonight. Michael Fulmer will pitch against Zach Plesac. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and open a home set against the Royals tonight. Adrian Houser will start against Danny Duffy.
NHL
The Lightning advanced to the Stanley Cup championship series with a 2-1 overtime victory over the Islanders last night. Tampa Bay won the Eastern Conference final 4-2. They’ll face the Stars for the Cup beginning tomorrow night.
NBA
The Heat got past the Celtics 106-101 last night. Miami leads the Eastern Conference final 2-0, with game three tomorrow night.
The Western Conference final begins this evening, as the Lakers face the Nuggets.
NFL
In last night’s game, the Browns outscored the Bengals 35-30.
