Houghton Softball Sweeps LL-H – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school softball yesterday…
• Houghton took two games from Lake Linden-Hubbell, 7-2 and 10-9. In the opener, Estella Soumis struck out 15 to earn the win. Clea Ollenkato had three hits, including a home run. Kenzie Collard also had three hits. In the nightcap, the Gremlins overcame a five-run deficit. Collard had four hits for Houghton, and Ollenkato added three. For the Lakes, Payton Goldsworthy had three hits, including a home run. Marissa Sullivan hit a grand slam, and drove in six runs. Olivia Shank and Jovie Daniels also had three hits.

In softball today…
• Houghton plays at Westwood to make up Tuesday’s rainout.
• Hancock welcomes Norway,
• Calumet travels to Gogebic.

In baseball yesterday…
• The Jeffers JV team v the Ewen-Trout Creek varsity – no report.

On this afternoon’s baseball schedule…
• Calumet plays at Houghton. Coverage will begin at 3:45 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Jeffers travels to Iron Mountain.

The Baraga Invitational golf tournament yesterday – no report.

In high school track today…
• Houghton and Calumet compete at Negaunee.
• Other local teams will compete at the L’Anse Early Bird Meet.

Jeff Hauswirth will take over as head coach of the Hancock High School varsity football team. Hauswirth is a teacher at Hancock Middle School, and steps up from the JV head coaching position. He replaces longtime head coach Ramon Sague, who stepped down at the end of last season. Chris Benge, also a middle school teacher, will remain on the staff as an assistant coach.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team has added another player for next season. Kaitlyn Maxwell transfers in as a grad student from Division I Saint Francis.

NHL

In opening-round NHL tournament games last night…
• The Bruins downed the Maple Leafs 4-2. Boston takes a 2-1 series lead.
• The Golden Knights outscored the Stars 3-1. Vegas leads that set 2-0.
• Anze Kopitar scored the game-winner, as the Kings shaded the Oilers 5-4 in overtime. That series is tied 1-1.

Tonight…
• The Lightning host the Panthers. Florida leads that series 2-0.
• The Islanders host the Hurricanes. Carolina leads that set 2-0.

NBA

In opening-round NBA tournament play last evening…
• The Heat upended the Celtics 111-101. That series is tied 1-1.
• The Thunder routed the Pelicans 124-92. Oklahoma City leads that set 2-0.

Tonight…
• The Magic host the Cavaliers. Cleveland leads that series 2-0.
• The 76ers entertain the Knicks. New York is up 2-0 in that set.
• The Lakers welcome the Nuggets. Denver has a 2-0 lead in that series.

MLB

The Tigers overcame an early deficit, but fell to the Rays 7-5 last night. Tampa Bay scored four runs off Jack Flaherty in the first two innings. Javier Báez’ double gave Detroit a one-run lead in the top of the sixth, but the Rats scored three off Will Vest in the bottom of the inning to regain control.

The Tigers have today off, and open a home series against the Royals tomorrow afternoon. Coverage will start at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Andy Ibáñez is headed to Toledo for a rehab stint. He’s been out with a strained hamstring. Gio Urshela, who has also been nursing a strained hamstring, has been cleared to resume baseball activities.

The Brewers shaded the Pirates 3-2 last evening. All three of Milwaukee’s runs came in the top of the third inning. After Pittsburgh responded with two in the bottom of the third, starter Bryse Wilson and four relievers allowed just one more hit.

The Brewers conclude that series at Pittsburgh this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Mitch Keller.

NFL

The NFL Draft begins with Round One tonight in Detroit. The Packers have the 25th selection. The Lions will pick 29th.

Rounds Two and Three will take place tomorrow evening, and the final four rounds will play out on Saturday.
