NFL

The National Football League has released its schedule for the 2021 season.

The Packers will open the regular season September 12th at New Orleans. The Lions will debut at home against the 49ers. Detroit will visit Green Bay in the Monday night contest in week two. Those teams will close the regular season against each other in Detroit January 9th. Other highlights for the Packers include a Thursday night game against the Cardinals in week eight, and Sunday night contests against the 49ers in week three, the Bears in week 14, and the Vikings in week 17. The Lions have no other prime time games.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons host the Denver Nuggets tomorrow.

The Pistons and head coach Dwane Casey have agreed to a contract extension that will keep Casey with the team through the 2023-24 season. Terms were not revealed.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers defeated the Kansas City Royals 4-2 last night. Casey Mize settled down after giving up two runs in the first inning, and pitched through the sixth to get the win. Daniel Norris, Michael Fulmer and Gregory Soto each pitched an inning of hitless relief, with Soto getting the save. Miguel Cabrera had two RBI singles, and passed Omar Vizquel to become Major League Baseball’s all-time hits leader among players born in Venezuela.

The Tigers and Royals conclude that series this afternoon in Detroit. Spencer Turnbull will face Daniel Lynch. Coverage begins at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

As expected, the Tigers put catcher Grayson Greiner on the injured list yesterday. He suffered a hamstring strain in Tuesday night’s game. Catcher and outfielder Eric Haase has been brought up from Toledo to fill in. Haase had to be added to the 40-man roster, so Detroit released pitcher Franklin Pérez. Pérez was once a top prospect, after coming to the Tigers from Houston in the Justin Verlander trade, but his career has been derailed by injuries. He’s facing shoulder surgery that will keep him off the field until at least next season.

The Milwaukee Brewers scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, and defeated the Saint Louis Cardinals 4-1 last night. Brandon Woodruff carried a 1-0 lead into the eighth inning, but left after Tyler O’Neill tied the game with a solo home run. Woodruff allowed just three hits, and struck out 10. In the bottom of the eighth, Travis Shaw’s RBI double reclaimed the lead for Milwaukee, and Avisaíl García sealed the win with a two-run homer. Devin Williams retired the only batter he faced to get the win. Josh Hader earned his eighth save.

The Brewers host the Cardinals again this afternoon. Corbin Burnes returns from the injury list to pitch against Jack Flaherty.
