Houghton Softball Sweeps Calumet – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball yesterday…
• Jeffers won both of its games against Calumet, 7-0 and 5-1.
• Houghton took two from Hancock, with a 10-7 win in the opener, and a 5-4 walk-off victory in the nightcap.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell swept Ewen-Trout Creek 11-10 and 13-6.
• Ontonagon v Ironwood – no report.

In baseball today…
• Houghton travels to Escanaba.

In softball yesterday…
• Houghton swept Calumet 11-3 and 18-3. The Gremlins rapped out 17 hits in game one, including triples by Gwen Markham, Clea Ollanketo and Fayah Zapolnik. Brynn Arko had two doubles, and Kenzie Collard had one. Estella Soumis gave up just five hits enroute to a complete game victory. Houghton added 16 more hits in the nightcap. Ollenkato had a triple, two doubles and a single, and drove in six runs. Zapolnik tripled, and Lexi Burns, Kia Markham and Collard doubled. Grace Brunet gave up three hits in a game that ended after three innings because of the mercy rule. Dana Berg had two hits for the Copper Kings.
• Hancock and Lake Linden-Hubbell split their doubleheader. The Bulldogs took the first game 5-4. Winning pitcher Sadie Biekkola struck out nine. Emily Jokela fanned 12, but took the loss for the Lakes. Kaisa Salani had two hits for Hancock. Jokela singled twice for Lake Linden, and Hailey Crouch had a double. The Lakes prevailed 10-5 in the nightcap. Kara Kinnunen was the winning pitcher, and Sydney Scholie took the loss. For Lake Linden, Jokela had a single, a double and a home run. Kara Kinnunen had two singles and a double, and Sydney Suhonen had a double. Salani homered for Hancock.

In softball today…
• Hancock plays at Crandon.

College Track

Michigan Tech’s Clayton Sayen repeated as titleist in the 1,500-meter run at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships yesterday. Katherine Jarvis set a new school record in the women’s shot put. Overall, the Huskies men’s team placed fifth, and the women’s team seventh. See details here.

MLB

The Tigers came from behind to edge the Cardinals 5-4 yesterday. Detroit grabbed an early lead with a two-run Javier Báez homer in the first inning, but trailed 3-2 by the time starter Matthew Boyd left the game after the sixth. RBI doubles by Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson plated three for the Tigers in the top of the seventh. St. Louis got one back in the eighth, but Alex Lange closed the door in the ninth, earning his sixth save.

The Tigers have won four straight, and continue that series at St. Louis today. Spencer Turnbull will start against Adam Wainwright. Coverage will begin at 1:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers’ struggles continued with a 6-4 loss to the Giants last night. Corbin Burnes allowed five runs over six innings.

The Brewers have lost five straight, and visit the Giants tonight. Colin Rea will start against Alex Cobb. 

Before last night’s game, Milwaukee called reliever Bennett Sousa up from Nashville, and sent reliever Jake Cousins down.
